The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The bar chart represents the data about the production and consumption of electricity in billion kWh unit of top ten countries of world in 2014.
Overall, there are ten countires are mentioned named as, China, US, Russia, Japan, India, Canada, France, Brazil, Germany and Korea, Rep. The Germany remained the only country where consumption of electricity is more than the production. China was reported as top country in both production and consumption, while Korea, Rep secured the last position in the list.
The production of China's electricity was 5398 billion kWh and the consumption was 5322. On second, The United States generates 4099 billion kWh and consumed 3866. Thirdly, Russia produced 1057 and consumed a little less from production around 1038 billion kWh. In Japan, 936.2 Billion kWh electricity is genrated and consumption was around 856.7. India was the fifth largest producer and consumer of electricity, which produces 871 Billion kWh and consumed 698.8.
Canada was at the 6th position with the genration of 618.9 and consumption around 499.9 kWh. Later, France creates 561.2 billion kwh and utilized 462.9 billion kWh of electricity. Brazil secured the 8th position by genrating 530.7 and by consuming 455.8 billion kWh of electricity. Germany at 9th consumed more energy that is 582.5 and produces 526.6 billion kWh. Lastly, Korea, Rep genrates 485.1 and consumes 449.5 billion kWh of electricity.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response covers the chart and gives a clear overview of the main patterns: China leads both measures, Korea is lowest, and Germany is the only country where consumption exceeds production. Most figures are reported accurately, including the large gap between China and the United States and the values for the other countries. This is relevant and sufficiently detailed, but the overview could identify the sharp drop from the two leading countries to the rest, which is a prominent feature. Some comparisons are also less fully developed: the country-by-country listing reports figures but rarely draws direct comparisons, and Germany’s unusual result could be highlighted more explicitly. A more selective summary of the key contrasts would make the main features clearer.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a coherent overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, and a detailed account that follows the countries’ ranking. Sequencing expressions such as “On second,” “Thirdly,” “Later,” and “Lastly” help the reader follow the list, and the overview prepares the reader for the details. This meets the lower-band expectations and shows some stronger control through clear paragraphing and progression. However, the repeated country-by-country pattern makes the report feel somewhat mechanical, and some links are awkward, such as “On second” and “Later.” Grouping the two leading countries separately from the remaining lower-output countries, while using clearer comparison links, would create a more flexible progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The response uses a range of task-relevant terms, including “production,” “consumption,” “top country,” “position,” and “utilized,” so the data is generally understandable. However, word choice and collocation are often imprecise or repetitive: “creates” and “generates” are used for electricity production, while “consumed” and “utilized” recur without adding much variety. There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “countires,” “genrated,” and “genration,” and inconsistent forms such as “kwh” and “Billion kWh.” These do not prevent understanding, but they reduce accuracy and polish. Aim for consistent, natural reporting language and check spelling and capitalization carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response includes both simple statements and some more developed structures, such as “The Germany remained the only country where consumption of electricity is more than the production.” Most figures and comparisons remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “there are ten countires are mentioned” has an unnecessary second verb, and “India was the fifth largest producer and consumer … which produces 871” shifts tense and has an unclear relative clause. Articles and agreement are also inconsistent in phrases such as “The production of China’s electricity” and “Germany at 9th consumed.” Use past-tense reporting consistently, form complete clauses, and check articles and subject–verb agreement. These improvements would make the range of structures more controlled.
