Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0

You identify the chart’s subject and give a relevant overview: China leads both measures, the United States is second, and production is generally above consumption. However, the response stops before reporting the main data in detail, so the comparisons are not sufficiently supported; for example, it does not give figures for China or the United States, or describe the lower-ranked countries. The statement that Japan and Russia had much lower figures is broadly relevant, but it does not clarify their positions or scale. The required minimum length is not met, which leaves the task only minimally addressed. Develop the overview with accurate figures and compare several countries, including Germany, where consumption exceeded production.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

There is a basic attempt to organise the response: an introduction is followed by an overview, and the opening phrase “Looking at the chart” suggests a move to supporting details. The ideas in the overview are also connected in a generally understandable order. However, the final line is unfinished (“Looking at the chat, ch”), so the response has no completed body paragraph or clear progression beyond the overview. The paragraphing and linking are therefore too limited to organise the chart information coherently. Complete the final sentence, then group comparisons logically—for instance, the two leading countries first and the remaining countries afterward—and use clear links such as “By contrast” when noting exceptions.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The response uses some appropriate task vocabulary, including “production,” “consumption,” “largest,” and “ranked second,” which communicates the basic subject and ranking. However, the range is narrow because the response contains very little description of the data, and some choices or spellings are inaccurate: “chat” appears to be intended as “chart,” and “mush lower” should be “much lower.” Country names also need consistent capitalisation (“China” and “United States”). These errors do not prevent the main overview from being understood, but they reduce precision and control. Build a wider set of accurate terms for describing figures and comparisons, such as “stood at,” “exceeded,” and “approximately,” and check spelling and capitalisation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response includes a few understandable sentence forms, including a compound overview sentence contrasting China, the United States, Japan, and Russia. The basic present-tense framing in “The bar chart illustrates” is appropriate. However, the range is very limited, and punctuation and sentence boundaries are not controlled consistently: the overview begins with “Overall,” but continues with a capitalised “The” after a comma, and the final line is an incomplete clause. The response also ends before demonstrating control of more varied structures. Use complete sentences throughout, separate the overview into correctly punctuated sentences, and practise adding accurate comparison clauses—for example, “Although production exceeded consumption in most countries, Germany consumed more than it produced.”
