Student answer (Band 6.5)

The bar chart illustrates the production and comsumption of electricity by top ten nations in 2014, measured in billion kWh.

Overview, it is clearly shown both the highest production and consumption of electricity was recorded by China followed by the United States of America while the lowest production and consumption was recorded by Korea Republic.

In 2014, China, the United States and Russia produced around 5,398, 4,099 and 1,057 billion kWh of electricity respectively however, their consumption level was slightly less which accounted for 5,322, 3,866 and 1,038 respectively. Furthermore, Japan produced only 936.2 billion Kwh of electricity which was considerably less as compared with the above three nations. Also, India consumed only 698.8 billlion Kwh of eletricity.

In contrast, Canada, France and Brazil produced 618.9, 561.2 and 530.7 billion Kwh of electricty and only used 499.9, 462.9 and 455.8 billion Kwh of it. Additionally, Germany consumed slighly more than it produced and Korea Republic produced only 485.1 billion Kwh of electricity whihc was the least as compared with above mentioned nations.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main pattern accurately: China leads production and consumption, the United States is second, and Korea has the lowest production. The overview also notes the lowest consumption, though it would be more precise to say Korea has the lowest consumption among the listed countries. Several figures and comparisons are reported accurately, including the three leading countries and the Canada–France–Brazil group. However, some important details are only briefly covered: Japan’s consumption and India’s production are omitted, and Germany’s unusual pattern is mentioned without giving its figures or comparing them with the other countries. This covers the task well overall, but fuller selection and development of these comparisons would make the account more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure, moving from an introduction and overview to comparisons among the leading countries and then the lower-producing group. Linking expressions such as “Furthermore,” “In contrast,” and “Additionally” help signal these shifts. The progression is generally easy to follow, although some connections are mechanical or leave relationships under-explained. For example, India’s consumption is introduced after Japan’s production without a clear comparison, and the final sentence combines Germany’s consumption pattern with Korea’s production. Grouping the countries more consistently and explaining the basis for each comparison would strengthen cohesion. The overview would also work better as a complete sentence rather than the fragment “Overview, it is clearly shown…”

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “production,” “consumption,” “recorded,” “respectively,” and “considerably less.” These terms make the main comparisons understandable, and you vary some wording with “produced,” “consumed,” and “used.” However, there are several spelling errors, including “comsumption,” “billlion,” “eletricity,” “electricty,” and “whihc,” which reduce accuracy. Some phrasing is also imprecise or repetitive: “only used … of it” is less natural than a direct comparison of consumption, while “as compared with above mentioned nations” is awkward. More precise collocations and careful proofreading would improve control and flexibility.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including a contrast with “however” and a relative clause in “which was the least.” Most of the meaning remains clear, but some grammatical errors persist. The overview lacks a complete sentence structure: “Overview, it is clearly shown both…” would be clearer as “Overall, China recorded the highest…”. In the first comparison, “respectively however” needs stronger punctuation, such as a full stop or semicolon before “however.” The phrase “which accounted for 5,322…” also has an unclear grammatical reference; “their consumption figures were…” would be more direct. Continue using varied sentence forms, while checking sentence boundaries, clause links, and agreement.
