Student answer (Band 7.0)

The bar graph illustrates the production and utilization of electricity among 10 countries in the year of 2014.

From an overall perspective, it is readily apparent that the data is from top 10 nations with the highest rank in production of energy. In contrast, China stood at the top spot in terms of production and consumption followed by USA. Meanwhile, Korea is at the bottom among 10 nations.

To begin with, China dominated in the ranking and produced 5,398 billion kWh of electricity as well as the consumption by a slight margin. United States generated 4,099 billion kWh and used 3,866 of it. Whereas Russia which is the third in the rank above Japan made 1,057 billion kWh of energy and utilized approximate the same amount. Japan ranks 4th with 936.2 billion kWh and 856.7 kWh.

Further ahead, even though India produced 871 billion kWh of electricity but the consumption was only 698.8 whereas Canada used only 500 kWh with the production of 618 kWh which made it rank at 6th position. France, Brazil and Germany ranked after each other, in which the production was between [redacted phone] billion kWh. Even though, the usage was between 442 and 455 in France and Brazil respectively but Germany's consumption over crossed the production by 60 billion kWh.

Finally, Korea, Rep produced 485.1 billion kWh with 449 kWh usage.

In summary, China, USA and Russia ranked at top 3. Germany is the only country from the data in which the consumption was higher than the production.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response covers all requirements of the task. You have successfully identified the main features, such as China's dominance and the comparison between production and consumption across the ten nations. The data is accurately reported, and you have made relevant comparisons, such as noting that Germany is the only country where consumption exceeds production. However, the report could be improved by grouping the data more effectively rather than listing countries individually, which can feel slightly mechanical. Overall, the information is well-selected and provides a clear summary of the provided chart.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a summary. You use cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'To begin with', 'Whereas', and 'In summary' to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly repetitive or forced, such as 'Further ahead', which is not the most natural choice for this context. Additionally, the paragraphing is generally effective, though the transition between the detailed data points could be smoother to improve the overall flow of information. The progression of ideas is clear throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information accurately, using terms like 'dominated', 'utilized', and 'production'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'consumption over crossed the production' (should be 'exceeded') and 'ranked after each other'. While you attempt to use more precise language, some phrasing remains slightly awkward. The vocabulary is adequate for the task, but incorporating more sophisticated synonyms for 'production' and 'consumption' or more varied ways to describe numerical trends would help elevate the score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, particularly with preposition usage and sentence construction, such as 'the consumption was only 698.8 whereas Canada used only 500 kWh with the production of 618 kWh which made it rank at 6th position'. The use of 'in which' is sometimes slightly unnatural. Punctuation is generally functional, but there are instances where sentence boundaries could be better managed. The errors do not impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent a higher band score.
