IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The given bar chart compares electricity generation and consumption ratio for top 10 countries targeting the year 2014.

Overall, it is clear that China and United States were ranked highest for both production and consumption.

To starts with, In 2014 China produced roughly 5400 Billion kWh energy with the consumption of around 5300 kwH which was the 5 time of Russia ( approximately 1000 production and consumption ). Furthermore US scored second by generating around 4000 billion kWh and with the usage of roughly 3800 kWh. In addition Korea only produced and used around 450 kWh energy. Germany was the only country which used more energy then production. Furthermore Japan made approximately 940 kWh with the usage of 850 billion kWh. India produced approx 870 kWh energy which is 200 and 300 billion higher than canada and France with the usage of 690 billion which was 200kwh higher than canada and France

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers the main features of the chart, identifying the top producers and consumers. However, the analysis is somewhat inconsistent. While you correctly identify China and the US as leaders, the comparison for other countries is less precise. For instance, stating Korea used '450 kWh' is inaccurate as the units are in billions, and the comparison between India, Canada, and France is confusingly phrased. To reach a higher band, ensure that data points are accurately transcribed and that comparisons are clearly articulated rather than just listing figures. The overview is present but could be more comprehensive regarding the general trends observed across the ten countries.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into an introduction, an overview, and a body paragraph. While there is a logical flow, the progression within the body paragraph is somewhat mechanical. You use cohesive devices like 'Furthermore' and 'In addition', but the connections between the data points are occasionally strained. The paragraphing is sufficient, but the internal structure of the body paragraph could be improved by grouping countries with similar trends rather than listing them individually. Referencing is generally clear, but the lack of smooth transitions between the specific comparisons makes the text feel like a list of facts rather than a cohesive summary.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks precision. You use terms like 'scored second' and 'made energy', which are not the most natural collocations for describing statistical data. There are also inconsistencies in units (e.g., '450 kWh' vs 'billion kWh'), which affects the clarity of the information. To improve, focus on using more precise reporting verbs and nouns, such as 'generated', 'consumed', 'surpassed', or 'accounted for'. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey the main message, but it does not demonstrate the flexibility or precision required for higher band scores.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity, such as 'which was the 5 time of Russia' and 'used more energy then production' (should be 'than'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the placement of numbers and units. While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of these errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of comparative structures will help improve your accuracy.
