Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses the task by identifying the top ten countries for electricity production and consumption. However, the overview is weak; it focuses on specific countries rather than identifying the main trends or significant differences between production and consumption across the group. The data selection is somewhat erratic, as it does not clearly compare the top producers against the top consumers in a structured way. While the key features are present, the analysis lacks depth and fails to provide a cohesive summary of the data, which limits the score to a 5.5.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is mechanical and sometimes inaccurate, such as the repetitive use of 'Firstly' and 'Secondly' to introduce lists of data. The progression of ideas is disjointed, as the transition between the overview and the body paragraphs is abrupt. Referencing is occasionally unclear, and the logical flow between sentences is hindered by awkward phrasing, which prevents the response from reaching a higher band.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and variety required for a higher score. There are frequent issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'highest record of production' instead of 'highest production levels' and 'medium electricity of the production'. The student relies on basic terminology and struggles to use more sophisticated academic language to describe trends or comparisons. While the meaning is generally clear, the limited range and inaccuracies in word choice are noticeable.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout. Issues include incorrect article usage ('the China', 'the Germany'), subject-verb agreement errors ('The Korea were'), and awkward sentence construction ('The Russia was the 1057 or 1038'). These errors are persistent and occasionally make the text difficult to read, although they do not completely impede communication. A greater focus on basic sentence accuracy and the correct use of articles is necessary to improve.
