Student answer (Band 6.5)
The bar chart below illustrates the top ten countires for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.
China was the leading consumer and producer of electricity with roughly 5 billion kWh. The united states comes in second, and consumes four times as much as the third ranekd country.
All of the ten illustrated countries have similiar relative a similiar balance between consumption and production of electricity. However india demonstrates the biggest discreptancy. Whule China and USA have by far the biggest amounts of elextricity produced and consumed, other industrial countries like germany only have about ten percent of their consumed and produced electricity.
Russia and Japan have consumption and production of electricity close to a billion kWh, while the remaining six countires are in the range of half a billion kWh. Another interesting fact is, that germany is the only country that consumes more than they produce. They have a difference between consumption and production of roughly 55 million kWh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response identifies the main features, such as China and the USA leading in production and consumption. However, the analysis is somewhat superficial. The claim that the USA consumes 'four times as much as the third ranked country' is inaccurate based on typical data for this chart, and the observation about Germany is slightly confusing in its phrasing. While the key trends are highlighted, the comparison between countries lacks precision, and the data interpretation is occasionally inconsistent. To reach a higher band, ensure that data points are cited accurately and that comparisons are clearly supported by the figures provided in the prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. There is a logical progression from the leaders to the smaller producers. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical, and some transitions between sentences feel abrupt. For instance, the jump from discussing India to Germany lacks a smooth logical bridge. The referencing is generally clear, but the overall flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to connect the ideas more fluidly rather than relying on simple sentence structures.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to describe the data effectively. However, there are several spelling errors, such as 'countires', 'similiar', 'discreptancy', 'whule', and 'elextricity'. These errors are frequent enough to be noticeable, though they do not impede communication. The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited; using more precise terms related to data trends (e.g., 'surpass', 'marginal', 'significant') would enhance the quality of the response. Focusing on accuracy in spelling and expanding the range of descriptive verbs will help improve this score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'The united states comes in second' (capitalisation), 'germany is the only country that consumes more than they produce' (subject-verb agreement), and 'Another interesting fact is, that' (incorrect comma usage). The control over punctuation and sentence structure is inconsistent. To improve, the writer should focus on proofreading for basic errors and attempt to incorporate more varied complex structures, such as subordinate clauses, to demonstrate greater grammatical control.
