Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have successfully identified the main features of the chart, such as the highest and lowest producers and consumers. You provided specific data points to support your descriptions, which is essential for Task 1. However, the analysis is slightly hampered by inaccuracies in data interpretation, such as the claim that Russia and Japan experienced a 'downward trend'—a bar chart for a single year cannot show a trend over time. Additionally, the comparison of Russia's production and consumption is confusingly phrased. To reach a higher band, ensure that your comparisons are mathematically accurate and avoid describing static data as a temporal trend.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is logically organized into paragraphs, with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a clear overview. You use some cohesive devices like 'In contrast', 'Whereas', and 'Moreover' to link ideas. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly misused, such as starting a sentence with 'In contrast' when the preceding information does not provide a direct contrast. Furthermore, the referencing is occasionally unclear, particularly when discussing the bottom-ranked countries. Improving the flow between sentences and ensuring that cohesive devices are used to show logical relationships rather than just acting as sentence starters will improve your score.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information, using terms like 'production', 'consumption', and 'accounted for'. However, there are several instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors, such as 'the China', 'the America', and 'to utilize the electricity'. The definite article 'the' is incorrectly applied to country names, and 'to utilize' is grammatically awkward in this context. While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, these persistent errors in articles and word forms prevent the response from reaching a higher band. Focus on learning the correct collocations for data reporting.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with article usage ('the China', 'the Germany') and punctuation (unnecessary spaces before commas, such as 'In contrast ,'). There are also issues with subject-verb agreement and preposition usage, such as 'consume 856.7 billion kwh' instead of 'consumed'. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to distract the reader. To improve, pay closer attention to basic sentence construction, article rules, and consistent verb tense usage when describing data.
