Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The bar chart given below compares the production and consumption of electricity in ten different countries in 2014, measured in kWh.

Overall, China and the United States produced and consumed far more electricity than other countries. In addition, electricity produced was slightly higher than the consumption in almost every country.

First of all, China ranked first, producing 5398 billion kWh electricity and consuming 5322 billion kWh electricity. The United States was second, with 4099 billion kWh electricity and 3866 billion kWh of consumption. These figures were much higher than those of the remaining countries.

Russia came third, generating 1057 billion kWh electricity and using 1038 billion kWh. Whereas Japan and India produced 936.2 billion kWh and 871 billion kWh respectively.

Among the remaining countries, Canada, France, Brazil, Germany and South Korea each produced 618.9 billion kWh to 582.5 billion kWh. Germany was slightly higher than production. In contrast, all the other countries produced more electricity than they consumed.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response successfully identifies the main features of the chart, including the clear dominance of China and the US. You have selected relevant data points to support your summary and made appropriate comparisons between production and consumption. However, the final paragraph is slightly confusing; you state that Germany's production was 'slightly higher than production' (which is illogical) and then claim all other countries produced more than they consumed, which contradicts the data for Germany. To reach a higher band, ensure that your data interpretation is precise and that you avoid contradictory statements when summarizing the trends.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs that group the countries effectively. You use cohesive devices such as 'In addition,' 'First of all,' and 'In contrast' to guide the reader. However, the transition between the third and fourth paragraphs is a bit abrupt, and the final sentence of the last paragraph lacks clarity due to the confusion mentioned in the task achievement section. Improving the flow between sentences and ensuring that cohesive devices are used to link ideas accurately will help elevate your score.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'generating,' 'consuming,' and 'respectively' correctly. The language is generally natural and clear. To improve, try to incorporate more varied synonyms for 'produced' and 'consumed' to avoid repetition, such as 'generated,' 'utilized,' or 'accounted for.' Additionally, be careful with word choice; for example, saying 'Germany was slightly higher than production' is grammatically and lexically unclear. Expanding your vocabulary to include more precise descriptors for trends and comparisons will help you achieve a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, and your control of grammar is generally good. Most sentences are clear and easy to follow. There are a few minor errors, such as '5398 billion kWh electricity' (should be 'of electricity') and the confusing phrasing in the final paragraph. While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the response from reaching the higher bands. Focusing on consistent article usage and ensuring that complex sentence structures are grammatically sound will improve your accuracy.
