IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The provided bar graph illustrates the information regarding the top ten nations for the manufacturing and utilisation of current in year 2014.
Overall, it is apparent that the maximum power was created and used in China. However, Korea produced least units of voltage.
To begin with, it can be lucid that the energy produced in China was more than its consumption which was 5398kWh. The difference observed between the current manufactured and utilised in America was 233KWh. Electricity produced and consumed was almost similar in Russia which was 1057kWh. The current manufactured in France was nearly half of the created in Japan which was 561kWh. The voltage used in India was less than power consumed in Japan and it was 698kWh.
Turning towards the remaining information, it can be seen that energy created in India and Canada was 891 and 898 KWh respectively. The electricity used produced in Canda was 499 kWh. In France 561KWh of energy was produced. The electricity produced and consumed in Brazil was neither more than 530kWh nor less than 450 KWh. The power produced and utilised in Germany has no difference it was 582kWh. Moreover, in Korea the enery was manufactury and consumed was least from all others which was 450kWh.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers the main features of the bar chart, identifying the top producer/consumer and noting some comparisons. However, the report is hampered by significant inaccuracies in data reporting. For instance, you state that Korea produced the least units of voltage, but the graph shows other countries with lower figures. Furthermore, the description of the data is often confusing; for example, stating 'the electricity used produced in Canda was 499 kWh' is unclear and factually inconsistent with the chart. While you attempt to compare figures, the lack of precision in data interpretation prevents a higher score. To improve, ensure you double-check the figures against the visual data and focus on clear, comparative summaries rather than listing individual data points.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'To begin with', and 'Turning towards', which provide a basic framework. However, the progression of ideas is sometimes disjointed, and the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the paragraph discussing India and Canada. The flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the logical grouping of information could be improved by focusing on trends rather than jumping between countries. Using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear thematic focus would enhance the coherence of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'manufacturing', 'utilisation', and 'consumption'. However, there are several instances of inappropriate word choice, such as using 'voltage' and 'current' to refer to electricity production in kWh, which is technically incorrect. Additionally, there are some spelling errors, such as 'enery' and 'manufactury'. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the general meaning, the lack of precision and the misuse of technical terms limit the score. Focusing on using subject-specific terminology correctly and proofreading for spelling errors will help you achieve a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt to use comparative structures, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'the electricity used produced in Canda' and 'the energy was manufactury and consumed was least'. Punctuation is generally functional, but there are issues with article usage and verb forms throughout the text. These errors are noticeable and occasionally make the meaning slightly difficult to follow, though they do not completely impede communication. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct construction of passive voice sentences, which are essential for describing data.
