Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main features of the chart, identifying the top two countries and grouping the remaining eight. However, the analysis is somewhat superficial. While you mention China and the USA are ahead, you do not explicitly compare the production and consumption figures for all countries, which is a key requirement for Task 1. The grouping of the 'next five' is a good attempt at synthesis, but the data presentation is a bit repetitive. To improve, ensure you highlight the most significant trends or anomalies, such as which countries produce more than they consume versus those that consume more than they produce.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, moving from an overview to specific details. Cohesive devices like 'Firstly', 'Likewise', and 'Furthermore' are used to connect ideas. However, the flow is occasionally mechanical, and some transitions feel forced. For example, the jump between the top two countries and the next three could be smoother. Additionally, the referencing is sometimes unclear, such as in the final paragraph where the grouping of countries is slightly confusing. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring clear logical progression between sentences would enhance the overall coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing for clear communication of the data. You use terms like 'ranked standings', 'categories', and 'figures' appropriately. However, there are several spelling errors, such as 'elctricity', 'elctronicity', 'Canda', and 'korea' (which should be capitalized). These errors are noticeable and detract from the professional tone. To reach a higher band, you should aim for more precise vocabulary to describe trends, such as 'surpass', 'exceed', or 'marginal difference', and ensure consistent accuracy in spelling and capitalization.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Subject-verb agreement is an issue, such as 'each countries have' (should be 'each country has') and 'korea have' (should be 'Korea has'). There are also issues with article usage and punctuation, such as missing commas after introductory phrases. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the data, they are frequent enough to limit the score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and proofreading for basic grammatical slips will help improve your accuracy.
