Student answer (Band 7.5)
The bar chart illustrates the leading ten nations in terms of electricity production and consumption in 2014, measured in billion kWh.
Overall, China and the United States generated and used far more electricity than the other eight countries combined, while Germany was the only nation where consumption exceeded production.
China ranked first by a considerable margin, producing 5,398 billion kWh and consuming almost as much, at 5,322 billion kWh. The United States followed in second place with production of 4,099 billion kWh and consumption of 3,866 billion kWh, though this was still less than half of China's figures.
The remaining eight countries produced under 1,100 billion kWh each. Russia came third, generating 1,057 billion kWh, just ahead of Japan and India, which produced 936.2 and 871 billion kWh respectively. Canada, France, Brazil, Germany and South Korea made up the bottom five, with figures ranging from roughly 485 to 619 billion kWh. Notably, Germany consumed more electricity (582.5) than it produced (526.6), unlike every other country shown.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response is excellent. You have successfully identified the main features of the data, specifically highlighting the dominance of China and the United States compared to the other nations. You also correctly identified the key exception regarding Germany's consumption exceeding its production. The data is accurately reported, and the comparisons are relevant and well-integrated. The overview is clear and provides a concise summary of the trends shown in the chart. You have fully addressed all parts of the task by selecting and reporting the most significant information, making this a very strong performance.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, a well-structured overview, and two body paragraphs that group the data effectively. The progression of ideas is smooth, moving from the global leaders to the remaining countries. Cohesive devices such as 'while', 'though', 'just ahead of', and 'notably' are used naturally and effectively to link sentences and clauses. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the overview from the detailed data analysis, and the referencing is clear throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a wide and precise range of vocabulary suitable for an academic task. Phrases such as 'by a considerable margin', 'exceeded production', and 'made up the bottom five' show a high level of control. The use of terminology is accurate, and the vocabulary is varied enough to avoid repetition. There are no noticeable errors in word choice or collocation, and the language used is natural and sophisticated, fitting the requirements for a high band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The writing displays a wide range of grammatical structures with high accuracy. You effectively use complex sentences, such as the contrastive structure in the second paragraph ('...though this was still less than half of China's figures') and the participial phrase in the third paragraph ('...generating 1,057 billion kWh, just ahead of...'). Punctuation is used correctly to manage the flow of information. The majority of sentences are error-free, and the control over tense and subject-verb agreement is consistent throughout the response.
