Student answer (Band 6.0)
The bar chart compares the ten leading nations in terms of their electricity production from nuclear plants and electricity consumption in these countries in 2014.
Overall, China occupied the first rank for energy production and consumption. Likewise, the United States was in second position. However, Korea was in last position for electricity production and utilization, with most countries showing a relatively balanced ratio between the two.
China was ranked first. They generated 5.398 billion kwh and consumed 5.322 billion. The United States produced electrical energy 4.099 billion kwh and utilized 3.866 billion. Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers the main features of the bar chart, identifying the top countries and noting the general trend of production versus consumption. You successfully highlighted the leading nations, China and the USA, and made relevant comparisons between the two metrics. However, the report lacks a clear overview of the data's scale, as the units are inconsistently described (e.g., '5.398 billion kwh' vs '871'). Additionally, the description of the lower-ranked countries is slightly vague. To improve, ensure you group data more effectively and provide a more precise summary of the overall trends rather than listing individual figures for every country, which can make the report feel like a data dump.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is logically organized into an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Likewise', 'However', and 'In contrast', to link ideas. However, the transition between the overview and the body paragraphs is slightly abrupt. The paragraphing is appropriate, but the flow within the second body paragraph is somewhat mechanical, relying heavily on listing figures. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of cohesive devices to connect sentences more fluidly and ensure that the progression of ideas feels natural rather than just a sequence of statements.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'utilization', 'generated', and 'marginally'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'reducing level' instead of 'consumption level' and 'both of this nation depicts' (should be 'these nations depict'). The repetition of 'billion kwh' and the inconsistent handling of numerical data slightly detract from the overall lexical quality. To improve, try to vary your verbs and nouns to describe trends and avoid repeating the same phrasing when discussing production and consumption figures.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('Both of this nation depicts') and awkward phrasing ('generated marginally higher than their usage'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are minor errors in sentence construction. To achieve a higher score, focus on ensuring subject-verb agreement and refining your use of complex structures. Proofreading for small errors like pluralization and preposition usage will help improve the accuracy of your writing.
