The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The bar charts show the top ten countries for electricity production and consumption in 2014.

Overall, China and the United States produced and used by far the most electricity, while Korea rep had the lowest figure. In most countries, production was slightly higher than consumption.

It is clear from data, China was the largest producer and consumer, with about 5,398 billion KWH produced and 5,322 billion KWH consumed. The United States was second, at around 4,099 billion KWH for production and 3,866 billion KWH for consumption. After these two, there was a big drop. Russia ranked third, with just over 1,050 billion KWH in both production and consumption.

It is worth noting that, Japan and India were next. Japan produced about 963 billion KWH, while India produced 871 billion KWH and used 699 billion KWH The remaining countries Canada, France, Brazil, Germany and Korea rep. all had lower figure, mostly between 450 and 620 billion KWH. China and the United States dominated electricity production and consumption in 2014, whereas the other countries used much smaller amounts.
