Student answer (Band 6.5)

The horizontal bar graph depicts the production and consumption of electricity among top ten ranked countries in 2014. The data is calibrated in billion kilowatt-hours (kWh).

Overall, China has produced as well as consumed the most amount of electricity followed by United States. All the nations consumed less electricity than they produced while Germany is the only exception.

China ranked as the prime nation as it produced 5398 billion kWh and consumed 5322 billion kWh of electricity. United State followed the trend with 4099 billion kWh of production along with 3866 billion kWh of electricity consumption. Whereas Russia was ranked third with more than 1000 billion kWh of electricity consumption as well as production.

In addition, India and Japan - both the nations produced more than 900 billion kWh of electricity and consumed less than 900 units. Moreover, Korea has least difference between the electricity consumption and production as both were under 490 to 450 billion kWh.

Furthermore, the production and consumption of nations such as Canada, France and Brazil ranged below 600 billion kWh of electricity. On the other hand Germany was the only nation with more consumption, that was 582.5 billion kWh than its production of 526.6 billion kWh of electricity.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers all requirements of the task. You have successfully identified the main features, such as China and the USA leading in both categories, and highlighted the notable exception of Germany. The data is accurately reported, and the comparisons are relevant. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are described with precision; for instance, your description of Korea is slightly vague ('under 490 to 450'), and the grouping of countries could be more analytical. Overall, the response provides a clear and accurate summary of the provided bar chart.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs that group information effectively. Cohesive devices such as 'In addition,' 'Moreover,' and 'On the other hand' are used to guide the reader through the data. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing could be smoother. For example, the phrase 'followed the trend' is a bit imprecise in this context. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different sets of data, which aids the overall readability of the report.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'calibrated,' 'depicts,' and 'exception' correctly. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'prime nation' (which is not standard in this context) and 'units' (when referring to billion kWh). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the information clearly, it lacks the more sophisticated, precise collocations that would characterize a higher band. Focusing on more academic phrasing for data comparison will help elevate your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'United State' (should be 'United States') and 'has least difference' (should be 'has the least difference'). Additionally, the sentence 'Germany was the only nation with more consumption, that was 582.5 billion kWh than its production' is slightly awkward in its construction. Despite these errors, the meaning is always clear, and the punctuation is generally handled well. Increasing the variety of complex structures while ensuring subject-verb agreement would improve this score.
