Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers the main features of the chart, identifying the top and bottom countries. However, the data presentation is inconsistent and contains significant inaccuracies. For instance, the student states China's production is 5,398 kWh, but the chart indicates 5,398 billion kWh. Furthermore, the comparison between Germany, Brazil, and France is confusingly phrased and mathematically imprecise. While the overview is present, the lack of precision in reporting the data and the failure to consistently use the correct units (billion kWh) limits the effectiveness of the report. The response addresses the task requirements but lacks the necessary accuracy to reach a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or awkward, such as 'At a fleeting glance' and 'Moving further'. There are issues with referencing and logical flow; for example, the transition between the comparison of China/USA and the subsequent paragraph about Germany is abrupt. The punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing spaces after periods and unnecessary double periods, which disrupts the flow of the text. Overall, the organisation is clear enough to follow, but the cohesion is not always managed skilfully.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but there are frequent errors in word choice and collocation. Phrases like 'caliberated in' are used incorrectly in this context, and 'moderately consumption' is grammatically incorrect. The student attempts to use some specific terminology, but the misuse of units (omitting 'billion') and the repetitive use of 'production and consumption' suggest a limited range. There are also spelling errors, such as 'stimately' instead of 'estimated' and 'usa' (not capitalised). To improve, the student should focus on using precise terminology and ensuring units are correctly stated.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Common issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'china produce and consume'), incorrect preposition use, and missing articles. The sentence structure is often clunky, such as 'while as compare with least production'. Punctuation is a significant weakness, with many instances of missing spaces after full stops and inconsistent capitalisation. While the meaning is generally understandable, the high frequency of basic grammatical errors prevents the response from reaching a higher band.
