Student answer (Band 7.0)
The bar chart illustrates the generation and consumption of electricity in the top ten countries in 2014.
Overall, China and the United States produced and consumed considerably more electricity than the others. In contrast, the production and consumption of electricity in Korea, Rep. and Germany were relatively low compared with the other countries.
An analysis of the chart reveals that China produced the highest amount of electricity, accounted for 5,398 billion kWh, whereas it consumed 5,322 billion kWh. A similar pattern was observed in the United States, where it produced 4,099 billion kWh and consumed 3,866 billion kWh of electricity. Moreover, Russia generated 1,057 billion kWh and consumed 1,038 billion kWh. Japan and India produced 936.2 billion kWh and 871 billion kWh, whereas they consumed 856.7 billion kWh and 698.8 billion kWh respectively.
From the chart it is evident that the figure for generation of electricity in Canada recorded 618.9 billion kWh and it consumed 499.9 billion kWh. Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully identified the main features of the data, including the clear dominance of China and the United States. The overview is concise and accurately highlights the key trends. You have selected and reported the data for all ten countries, making relevant comparisons between production and consumption. The response is well-structured, and the inclusion of specific data points effectively supports your summary. To reach a higher band, ensure that you group the data more analytically rather than listing figures country by country, which would demonstrate a more sophisticated approach to data synthesis.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs that group the countries effectively. You use cohesive devices such as 'whereas', 'in contrast', and 'furthermore' to link ideas and comparisons smoothly. The progression of information is logical, moving from the highest producers to the lower ones. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the main trends from the detailed data. The flow of the text is natural, and the referencing is clear throughout the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information clearly. Phrases like 'illustrates the generation and consumption', 'a similar pattern was observed', and 'it is evident that' are appropriate for an academic report. While the vocabulary is accurate, it is somewhat functional. To achieve a higher band, you could incorporate more varied synonyms for 'produced' and 'consumed' (e.g., 'generated', 'yielded', 'utilized', 'expended') and use more precise collocations to describe the data trends, such as 'outstripped' or 'surpassed'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation is good. There are minor slips, such as 'accounted for 5,398 billion kWh' (should be 'accounting for') and '455.8 billion of electricity' (missing 'kWh'). However, these errors are infrequent and do not impede communication. You demonstrate good control over complex structures, particularly when using subordinate clauses to make comparisons between production and consumption figures.
