The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

the given bar chart compares the production and consumption of electricity in top ten countries in 2014, measured in billion kwh.

it can be clearly seen that, china and the united states were by far the largest producers and consumers of electricity, with china leading in both. in 9 out of 10 countries, production exceeded consumption, with germany being the only exception were consumption was higher.

the top two countries dominated the figures. china produced 5,398 billion kwh and consumed 5,322 billion kwh. the us was second, with 4,099 billion kwh produced and 3,866 billion kwh consumed. both nations produced and consumed more than 3 times as much as russia.

for the remaining countries, production was also higher than consumption. the gaps were particularly large on india and canada. india produced 871 billion kwh but consumed only 698.8 billion kwh, while canada figures were 618.9 billion kwh produced and 499.9 billion kwh consumed respectively.

in contrast, germany was unique it produced 526.6 billiob kwh but consumed 582.5 billion kwh.
