IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The bar chart illustrates the average production and consumption of electricity in ten countries: China, the USA, Russia, Japan, India, Canada, France, Germany, Brazil and Korea in 2014.
Overall, China and the USA were the top two countries in terms of electricity production and consumption, while Korea had the lowest figures for both production and consumption. In most countries, production was higher than consumption, with Germany being the only exception.
China's production and consumption figures were both 5,322. The USA had a production figure of 4,099 and a consumption figure of 3,866.
Russia had a production figure of 1,057 and a consumption figure of 3,866. Japan ranked fourth, with production and consumption figures of 936.2 and 856 respectively. India had figures of 871 and 698 for production and consumption, respectively, while Canada had production of 618 and consumption of 499.
France, Brazil and Germany had relatively similar production figures, at 561, 530 and 526 respectively. Their consumption figures were 462, 455 and 582 respectively. Finally, Korea had the lowest figures, with production at 485 and consumption at 449.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers all parts of the task by identifying the top ten countries and comparing production and consumption. You successfully highlighted the main features, such as China and the USA leading the rankings and the observation that production generally exceeds consumption, with Germany as the exception. However, there is a significant factual error in the body paragraph regarding Russia; you stated the consumption figure was 3,866, which is identical to the USA's figure and contradicts the data provided in the chart. Accuracy in data reporting is essential for a high band score in Task 1. To improve, ensure that all figures are transcribed precisely from the source material.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs that group the data effectively. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. You used cohesive devices such as 'while', 'respectively', and 'in terms of' to link information. However, the transition between the third and fourth paragraphs is slightly abrupt. The use of 'Finally' to introduce the last country is appropriate, but the overall flow could be improved by using more varied linking phrases to connect the comparisons between production and consumption more fluidly throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the data, including terms like 'illustrates', 'ranked', and 'figures'. The use of 'respectively' is a good way to handle multiple data points efficiently. However, the vocabulary is somewhat repetitive, relying heavily on the word 'figures' throughout the response. To reach a higher band, you should incorporate more varied synonyms for data points, such as 'levels', 'quantities', 'output', or 'usage'. Additionally, ensure that the terminology used is precise; for instance, 'figures' is a bit vague when referring to specific electricity measurements.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response demonstrates a good control of grammar with a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are error-free, and the punctuation is generally accurate. You successfully used complex structures, such as 'In most countries, production was higher than consumption, with Germany being the only exception.' There are no major grammatical errors that impede communication. To achieve a higher band, you could experiment with more sophisticated sentence structures, such as using passive voice or participle clauses to describe the data trends more dynamically, rather than relying on a list-like structure for the figures.
