Student answer (Band 6.5)
The bar chart illustrates the figures for top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014. At a glance, China topped the list with the highest electricity production and consumption, while Republic of Korea occupied the last position with the lowest production and consumption.
To begin, China produced 5398 billion kWh electricity and consumed 5322 billion kWh. America produced 4099 billion kWh and used 3866kWh. Surprisingly, after these two countries, all the remaining countries have produced less than 1057 billion kWh. Russia ranked the 3rd, with almost same production and consumption, which was 1057 and 1038 respectively. Japan occupied the fourth position, with 936.2 billion kWh production and 856.7 kWh usage. India represented the fifth position, followed by Canada, France, Brazil , Germany and Korea. There were minor differences in the figures for France and Brazil, which were 561.2 - 462.9 for France and 530.7 - 455.8 for Brazil respectively. In contrast, Germany was the only country producing less and consuming more electricity, and the values were 526.6 and 582.5 kWh. Korea generated 485.1 billion kWh and used 449.5 billion kWh.
Overall, it is immediately apparent that, China dominated the list with the highest figures, whereas Germany showed an opposite trend. Meanwhile, India occupied an intermediate position.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have successfully identified the main features of the chart, including the clear dominance of China and the United States compared to the other nations. You also correctly highlighted the unique trend observed in Germany. The overview is clear and provides a good summary of the data. However, to reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are presented with consistent units. For instance, you omitted 'billion kWh' in several places (e.g., '3866kWh', '856.7 kWh usage'), which creates ambiguity. Additionally, while you listed the countries, the comparison between the lower-ranked countries could be more analytical rather than just listing them in sequence.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a concluding overview. You use cohesive devices such as 'To begin', 'In contrast', and 'Meanwhile' to guide the reader through the data. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the high-production countries from the rest of the list. To improve, ensure that referencing is always clear; for example, in the second paragraph, the transition between the top two countries and the rest of the list is smooth, but the flow could be improved by using more varied linking phrases rather than relying on simple sequential markers.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information clearly, using terms like 'topped the list', 'occupied the last position', and 'intermediate position'. There is an attempt to use less common vocabulary, which is appropriate for an Academic Task 1 response. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in collocation and precision, such as 'figures for top ten countries' (should be 'figures for the top ten countries') and 'almost same production' (should be 'almost the same production'). Improving the precision of these phrases will help elevate your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are clear and error-free, which allows for easy communication. There are some minor grammatical slips, such as missing articles ('the' Republic of Korea) and inconsistent unit usage. Additionally, the sentence 'all the remaining countries have produced less than 1057 billion kWh' uses the present perfect tense where the simple past would be more appropriate given the specific year (2014) mentioned in the prompt. Overall, your control of grammar is solid, with only occasional errors that do not impede understanding.
