Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response provides a basic overview and identifies some key features, such as China and the USA leading in production and consumption. However, the report is incomplete and lacks a systematic comparison of the data. The student fails to accurately present the figures for several countries, and the analysis is fragmented. The instruction to 'make comparisons where relevant' is only partially met; for instance, the comparison between China and the USA is imprecise. The inclusion of personal commentary, such as 'we report to examiner', is inappropriate for an Academic Task 1 response, which should remain objective and formal.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the logical progression is weak. The use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or misused, such as 'First of all, we report to examiner' and 'At last Korean and Rep were presented'. Referencing is sometimes unclear, and the flow between sentences is disjointed. While there is an attempt to group information, the transition between the general overview and the specific data points lacks clarity, making the overall structure feel somewhat disjointed and repetitive in its phrasing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is limited and repetitive, relying heavily on basic terms like 'production', 'consumption', and 'countries'. There are noticeable errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'in last rank' instead of 'ranked last' and 'all most same' instead of 'almost the same'. The student struggles to use precise terminology to describe trends or data points, which restricts the ability to convey information accurately. The range of vocabulary is just sufficient to communicate the basic intent but lacks the flexibility and precision required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains a mix of simple and some attempted complex structures, but these are frequently marred by grammatical errors. Issues include incorrect article usage ('the china', 'the Russia'), subject-verb agreement errors ('These countries production... were'), and awkward sentence construction ('the electricity production and consumption in Germany was that, the consumption rate...'). Punctuation is inconsistent, and the overall control of grammar is weak, which occasionally impedes the reader's understanding of the data being presented.
