Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main features of the chart, identifying the top producers and consumers. However, the analysis is somewhat mechanical, simply listing data points rather than making meaningful comparisons. For instance, the comparison between China and the US is repetitive. The overview is weak; stating that electricity production is in an 'up trend' is not supported by the static 2014 data provided in the chart. To improve, focus on grouping countries by their production levels and highlighting the relationship between production and consumption more analytically rather than just listing figures.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the logical flow is hindered by repetitive sentence structures and awkward transitions. The use of cohesive devices is basic and sometimes misused, such as starting sentences with 'And' or 'the other country like'. Referencing is occasionally unclear, and the progression of ideas feels disjointed. To reach a higher band, use a wider variety of linking words (e.g., 'In contrast', 'Furthermore', 'Conversely') and ensure that each paragraph has a clear thematic focus rather than just listing countries sequentially.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is limited and repetitive. Words like 'produce', 'consume', and 'amount' are used throughout the text without variation. There are also errors in word choice, such as 'manufacture electricity' (electricity is generated, not manufactured) and 'in a small number' (when referring to quantities, 'small amount' or 'lower volume' is more appropriate). To improve, incorporate more precise terminology related to data reporting, such as 'generated', 'accounted for', 'surpassed', and 'marginal difference'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response relies heavily on simple sentence structures. There are frequent grammatical errors, including missing articles ('the China', 'the Korea Rep'), incorrect verb forms ('the chart show'), and issues with subject-verb agreement. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with many run-on sentences and misused periods. While the meaning is generally clear, the lack of complex structures and the frequency of basic errors prevent a higher score. Focus on mastering subject-verb agreement and using a mix of complex sentences to improve fluency.
