IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The bar chart demonstrates the top ten countries with the highest electricity production and consumption in 2014. The general trend is that most of the countries produce more electricity than they consume. However, Germany is an exception to the aforementioned statistic. Further, the difference between the electricity consumption and production in each country is minimal. China ranked first in terms of both electricity production and consumption while Korea ranked last.
China has the highest amount of electricity consumption as well as production. It produced 5398 billion kWh and consumed 5322 billion kWh of electricity. United States was a close second in the race for electricity consumption and production. It produced 4099 billion kWh and consumed 3866 billion kWh of electricity in the entire year. Russia was ranked third in terms of its electricity production and consumption with 1057 billion kWh and 1038 billion kWh respectively. It is evident from the bar chart that there was a significant decline in the electricity production and consumption from the United States to Russia. Japan ranked 4th since it produced 936.2 billion kWh and consumed 856.7 billion kWh of electricity. India ranked 6th in terms of production and consumption of electricity. India was followed by Canada, France, Brazil, Germany and Korea, in a descending order. Germany displayed a peculiar statistic since its electricity consumption was higher than its electricity production. This hints at the fact that Germany is potentially in need of better administration and management of its electricity production and consumption.
Therefore, the chart helps portray the trends surrounding electricity production and consumption in the top ten countries in 2014. A thorough analysis of this data set would help governments in formulating more efficient plans for energy consumption and production in the upcoming years.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response effectively identifies the main features of the data, such as China's dominance and the general trend of production exceeding consumption. You have successfully selected and reported key figures to support your points. However, the analysis of Germany is slightly flawed; you interpret the data as a need for 'better administration,' which is an external opinion rather than an objective summary of the provided data. To reach a higher band, ensure that all commentary remains strictly analytical and focused on the data trends rather than speculating on the causes or solutions for the figures presented.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a concluding summary. The progression of ideas is smooth, and you use cohesive devices such as 'further,' 'however,' and 'consequently' effectively to link sentences. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the overview from the detailed data analysis. The referencing is generally clear, though the transition between the general overview and the specific data points could be slightly more refined to ensure a seamless flow throughout the entire response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for an Academic Task 1 response, using terms like 'descending order,' 'peculiar statistic,' and 'formulating.' The language is generally precise and fits the context of reporting data. There are no significant errors in word choice that impede communication. To improve further, try to incorporate more varied synonyms for 'production' and 'consumption' to avoid repetition, and use more sophisticated collocations to describe the trends in the bar chart, such as 'marginal difference' or 'substantial disparity.'
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The response displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation is solid. You successfully use comparative structures, such as 'China has the highest amount of electricity consumption as well as production.' While the grammar is generally accurate, there are occasional minor slips, such as the phrasing 'United States was a close second,' which should ideally include the definite article ('The United States'). Overall, the grammatical control is strong and supports clear communication throughout the text.
