IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The supplied bar chart illustrates the amount consumption and generation of electricity by top ten nations during 2014.
Overall, it is immediately apparent that the china and the USA were dominant in energy production and utilization, and the rates of consumptions of electricity are almost lower than its production rates in every country.
The China was leading the USA by producing over 5000 billion kWh electricity and consuming almost the whole amount while America was generating 4100 billion units and saving about 1200 billion kWh in 2014.
Russia and Japan were making around a thousand billion kWh and utilizing it almost completely in 2014. On the other hand, India, Canada, and France produced about 936, 870 and 620 billion kWh and saved about 100 billion units. Similarly, Brazil was generating exactly 530 billion kWh and using 455 Billion units. Finally, Korea produced 485 units and used 450 but Germany was the only country that utilized 580 billion kWh but produced about 530 billion units.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers all parts of the task by identifying the top ten countries and comparing production and consumption. The overview is clear, correctly identifying China and the USA as the dominant nations. However, the report of data is slightly inconsistent; for instance, the description of India, Canada, and France as having 'saved about 100 billion units' is a broad generalization that lacks the precision expected for a Band 7. Furthermore, the phrasing 'almost lower than' is confusing and inaccurate. While the main features are selected, the analysis could be more precise in its comparisons to reach a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized into an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. There is a clear progression of ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'On the other hand', 'Similarly', and 'Finally' are used to link sentences and paragraphs effectively. However, the referencing is occasionally mechanical, and the flow between the specific data points in the final paragraph feels slightly list-like. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the overall structure supports the reader's understanding of the information presented in the chart.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task, using terms like 'production', 'consumption', 'utilization', and 'dominant'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'rates of consumptions of electricity are almost lower than its production rates' and 'making around a thousand billion'. The use of 'units' is repetitive, and the phrasing 'saving about' is not the most precise way to describe the difference between production and consumption in an industrial context. A wider range of precise, topic-specific vocabulary would improve the score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, particularly with articles, such as 'the china', 'the USA', and 'The China'. Additionally, there are issues with subject-verb agreement and preposition usage, such as 'rates of consumptions' (plural noun where singular is needed) and 'utilized 580 billion kWh but produced about 530 billion units' (which lacks a clear subject-verb connection in the second clause). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher band score.
