IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The bar chart gives information about the ten countries that were at the peak in the production and consumption of electricity in the year 2014. Both production and electricity are measured in billion kWh.

Overall, these countries were ranked accordingly from the highest producer and consumer being China to the lowest which was Korea Republic. In 2024, two countries( China and United States) witnessed a higher value in both production and consumption of electricity than the rest of the countries. All countries except Germany experienced high values in production of electricity than consumption.

China recorded the highest value in production of electricity by 5,398 in billion kWh while Korea Republic experienced the lowest production by 485.1 in billion kWh. The United States was the country after China to witness a greater value of production by 4,099 in billion kWh.

China also consumed electricity at the highest level of 5,322 in billion kWh followed by the United States that exhausted 3,866 of its electricity. Korea Republic also maintained the country that used little electricity by 449.5 in billion kWh.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers the main features of the bar chart, identifying the top producers and consumers. You successfully highlighted the dominance of China and the United States and noted the general trend where production exceeds consumption for most countries. However, there is a factual error in the text: you mentioned the year 2024, whereas the prompt specifies 2014. Additionally, while you mention the highest and lowest countries, the comparison between the two metrics could be more analytical. For instance, noting that Germany is the exception to the production-exceeds-consumption trend is a good observation, but the report would benefit from more specific comparisons between the middle-ranked countries to fully satisfy the 'make comparisons where relevant' requirement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs focusing on production and consumption respectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate these themes. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'while', and 'followed by' are used to guide the reader. However, the progression within paragraphs is slightly mechanical, and some referencing is repetitive (e.g., repeating 'in billion kWh' at the end of every sentence). Improving the flow by using more varied linking phrases would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'recorded', 'witnessed', and 'exhausted'. However, some word choices are slightly unnatural or imprecise, such as 'at the peak' instead of 'leading countries' or 'exhausted' to describe electricity consumption. The repetition of 'in billion kWh' at the end of almost every sentence is stylistically weak and limits the lexical variety. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise reporting verbs and avoiding repetitive phrasing by integrating the units of measurement more naturally into the sentence structure.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'experienced high values in production of electricity than consumption', where 'higher' should be used for the comparative. Additionally, 'the country after China to witness' is slightly awkward phrasing. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more careful proofreading of comparative structures. Punctuation is generally handled well, though the placement of parentheses around 'China and United States' is unnecessary and slightly informal for an academic report.
