Student answer (Band 7.0)

The bar chart compares electricity production and consumption in the ten leading countries, measured in billion kilowatt-hours.

Overall, China and the United States were by far the largest producers and consumers of electricity, while the figures for the remaining countries were considerably lower. In most countries, production exceeded the consumption, with Germany being the notable exception.

China generated approximately 5398 billion kwh, marginally more than its consumption of 5322 billion kwh. The corresponding figures for the United States were 4099 and 3866 billion kwh. Russia ranked third, producing 1057 billion kwh and consuming 1038 billion kwh. Japan and India followed , although Japan consumed 856.7 billion kwh compared with production of 936.2 billion kwh, while India generated 871 billion kwh and used about 698.8 billion kwh of electricity.

Among the remaining nations, Canada produced 618.9 billion kwh and consumed 499.9 billion kwh . Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response effectively addresses all parts of the task. You have successfully identified the main features, such as the dominance of China and the United States, and made relevant comparisons between production and consumption. The data is accurately reported, and the overview provides a clear summary of the trends. The inclusion of specific figures for all ten countries ensures that the information is well-supported. To reach a higher band, you could further synthesize the data by grouping countries with similar characteristics more explicitly, rather than listing them sequentially, which would enhance the analytical quality of the report.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs that group the data effectively. Cohesive devices such as 'while', 'whereas', and 'the corresponding figures' are used appropriately to link ideas and comparisons. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate the main trends from the detailed data. The progression of information is smooth, moving from the largest producers to the remaining nations. The use of referencing is clear, and the overall structure supports the reader's understanding of the data presented in the bar chart.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information with precision. Phrases like 'leading countries', 'notable exception', and 'substantial surpluses' are used effectively. There is a good awareness of style appropriate for an academic report. While the vocabulary is accurate and fits the context well, it remains somewhat functional. To achieve a higher band, you could incorporate a wider variety of less common lexical items related to data description, such as 'outstripped', 'marginal disparity', or 'a significant lead over'. Overall, the lexical control is solid and supports clear communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The response displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You have used comparative structures effectively, such as 'marginally more than' and 'compared with'. Grammatical control is generally strong, with very few errors. Punctuation is mostly accurate, though there are minor spacing inconsistencies (e.g., extra spaces before commas). The majority of your sentences are error-free, which indicates a high level of accuracy. To improve further, ensure consistent spacing and consider using more varied complex structures, such as participle clauses, to increase the sophistication of your writing.
