Student answer (Band 5.5)

The bar chart compares top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014. The focus is on relative size rather than change over time.

In bar chart production of electricity shows with block color while grey color shows consumption of electricity.

Overall, China was clearly the largest country in electricity consumption and production. There was a noticeable gap between the top and bottom countries. Korea is amongst the smallest country in electricity consumption and production. There is a moderate value of Russia and Japan.

Specifically, China reached approximately 5,398 in electricity production, ahead of unites states at around 4,099. In India the electricity production is 871 while its consumption is 698.8.

In conclusion, there is a major change in France and Brazil country that shows the changes in electricity consumption and production. This contrast underlines how uneven the distribution was.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, which significantly impacts the task achievement score. While you identify the main features, such as China being the leader, the analysis is underdeveloped. You mention specific figures for China, the US, and India, but you fail to provide a comprehensive comparison of the ten countries listed. Furthermore, the conclusion contains a factual error, claiming there is a 'major change' in France and Brazil, which is not supported by the static data provided in the chart. To improve, ensure you cover all key trends and comparisons without introducing external interpretations or inaccuracies.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into paragraphs, but the logical progression is weak. The transition between the overview and the specific details is abrupt. Cohesive devices are used, but they are often mechanical or misused, such as 'Specifically' and 'In conclusion'. The referencing is sometimes unclear, particularly in the final paragraph where the mention of 'major change' lacks a clear connection to the data. The flow of ideas is somewhat disjointed, making it difficult for the reader to follow the comparison of the ten countries effectively. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring each paragraph has a clear focus would enhance the coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is limited and repetitive. You frequently use basic terms like 'country', 'production', and 'consumption'. There are also issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'block color' instead of 'shaded bars' or 'a legend'. The phrase 'moderate value of Russia and Japan' is imprecise and does not clearly describe the data. To reach a higher band, you should incorporate more precise academic vocabulary related to data description, such as 'surpassed', 'accounted for', or 'a significant disparity', and avoid repeating the same nouns and verbs throughout the text.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains several grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include 'shows with block color' (missing subject/passive voice), 'unites states' (capitalization error), and 'Korea is amongst the smallest country' (subject-verb agreement and pluralization error). The sentence structures are mostly simple, with limited attempts at complex sentences. Punctuation is generally functional, but the overall control of grammar is inconsistent. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement, correct article usage, and expanding your range of sentence structures by using subordinating conjunctions to combine related ideas.
