IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The given charts illustrates the top countries ranked by their production and utilisation of electricity in the year 2014. Units for both are in billion kWh.
Overall, looking at the highs and lows, China topped the charts in both production and consumption meanwhile, the Republic of Korea was at the very bottom. Germany was the outlier having consumed more electricity than it produced.
In terms of production, United States was ranked second, producing a little over 4000 billion kWh of electricity (almost 4 times the few subsequent countries). Russia, Japan and India followed with them producing 1057, 936.2, 871 billion kwH of electricity respectively. Canada, France, Brazil, Germany ranked 6th - 9th and produced around similar amount of electricity.
On the other hand, taking a look at the consumption it is evident that the US and China were at the top having consumed 3,866 and 5,322 billion kWh of electricity.
The consumption too drastically drops at the third rank. Russia consumed around 1000 billion kWh all the way down to Korea having consumed 450 billion kWh of electricity.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers all parts of the task by identifying the top ten countries for electricity production and consumption. You successfully highlight the main features, such as China leading in both categories and the Republic of Korea at the bottom. The comparison regarding Germany as an outlier is a strong analytical point. However, the report could be improved by more precise data integration; for instance, stating that the US produced 'almost 4 times' the subsequent countries is inaccurate based on the provided figures (4000 vs 1000). Ensure that comparisons are mathematically supported to reach the higher bands.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and separate body paragraphs for production and consumption. Cohesive devices like 'In terms of', 'On the other hand', and 'meanwhile' are used effectively to guide the reader. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two main data sets. The progression of ideas is clear, though the transition between the overview and the body paragraphs could be slightly smoother to enhance the flow of the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'outlier', 'utilization', and 'evident'. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'the few subsequent countries', which is slightly unnatural in this context. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the information clearly, it lacks the more sophisticated, precise collocations required for a higher band score. Expanding your repertoire of reporting verbs and comparative adjectives would be beneficial.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are a few grammatical slips, such as 'The given charts illustrates' (subject-verb agreement error) and 'with them producing' (awkward phrasing). Punctuation is generally handled well, and the errors present do not impede communication. To achieve a higher score, aim for more consistent control over complex structures and ensure that subject-verb agreement is accurate throughout the text.
