IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The presented diagram illustrates a bar chart with different production and consumption patterns of electricity in the top ten countries in 2014. All the countries are presented on the y-axis, China being on the top and Korea being on the tenth number. The dark colored bar shows the production while the light colored bar shows the consumption of the respective country.

Starting with the China, the top most country producing electricity. Population growth rate was tremendously increasing in China so it consumed electricity at the higher rate of 5,398 billion kWh. Almost similar patterns were being observed in United States where the production was higher so did the consumption. The third country was Russia where production and consumption was almost at the similar rate, production in Russia was at 1,057 billion kWh and the consumption was 1,038 billion kWh. In Japan and India the production was higher but the consumption was lower. Similarly, Canada, France and Brazil also followed the same pattern of more production and less consumption.

But the situation changed in Germany, the production of electricity was at 526.6 billion kWh but the consumption was higher at 582.5 billion kWh making it different from other countries being represented on the bar chart. This trend showed that the country consumed more than it produced. Lastly, in Korea the production of electricity was higher than consumption.

The bar graph presented how production and consumption patterns fluctuated among the countries in 2014.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers all parts of the task by identifying the main features of the bar chart. You successfully highlighted the top producers and consumers and noted the exception of Germany. However, the analysis is somewhat descriptive and lacks a clear, cohesive overview of the data trends. While you mention China and the US, the comparison between countries could be more analytical rather than just listing figures. To improve, ensure you group countries by their production/consumption relationship (e.g., those where production exceeds consumption versus those where it does not) to provide a more sophisticated summary of the main features.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a concluding summary. Cohesive devices such as 'Starting with', 'Similarly', and 'But the situation changed' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing could be smoother. For instance, the transition between the second and third paragraphs is abrupt. The paragraphing is appropriate, and there is a clear progression of ideas from the top producers to the specific exception of Germany. Overall, the structure is coherent and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'production', 'consumption', 'patterns', and 'fluctuated'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'top most country' (should be 'leading country') and 'on the tenth number' (should be 'in tenth place'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning clearly, it lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band. Incorporating more sophisticated collocations related to data interpretation would enhance the quality of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'so did the consumption' (should be 'as did the consumption') and 'production in Russia was at 1,057 billion kWh' (missing articles or awkward phrasing). Additionally, 'The bar graph presented how...' should be in the present tense ('presents'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles would significantly improve your accuracy.
