Student answer (Band 7.0)

The chart compares the production and consumption of electricity by the top 10 nations in 2014.

Overall, China ranked first in both the production and consumption of electricity, followed by the United States, whereas the South Korea recorded the lowest figures.

China produced 5,398 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity and consumed 5,322 billion kWh of electricity, positioned first among the ten countries. Subsequently, the United States generated 4,099 billion kWh and used 3,866 billion kWh of electricity, ranking second. The power production and usage in Russia were almost the same, at 1,057 billion kWh and 1,038 billion kWh, respectively. The figures for electricity output and consumption in Japan stood at 936.2 billion kWh and 856.7 billion kWh, respectively. Furthermore, for India, the figures recorded were 871 billion kWh and 698.8 billion kWh, in the respective order.

The data on electricity ouput and usage for Canada, France, and Brazil were substantially lower, at 618.9 and 499.9, 561.2 and 462.9, and 530.7 and 455.8 billion kWh, respectively. Germany recorded 526.6 billion kWh of power ouput and 582.5 billion kWh of electricity consumption, making it the only country to record higher electricity conumption than production, while the Republic of Korea ranked the lowest among the ten nations, at 485.1 billion kWh and 449.5 billion kWh of electricity output and utilisation, in that order.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response effectively addresses the task by identifying the main features and providing relevant comparisons. You have successfully highlighted the top two countries, China and the United States, and correctly identified Germany as the only country where consumption exceeds production. The data is presented clearly, and the selection of information is appropriate for a summary. To reach a higher band, ensure that the overview captures the most significant trends more holistically, perhaps by noting the general disparity between production and consumption across the majority of the nations listed, rather than just listing the data points sequentially.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the general overview from the detailed data analysis. Cohesive devices such as 'subsequently', 'furthermore', and 'while' are used appropriately to link sentences and clauses. The referencing is generally clear, and the information flows smoothly from one point to the next. To improve, you could vary the cohesive devices slightly more to avoid repetitive structures when listing data for multiple countries, which would enhance the overall flow and sophistication of the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for an Academic Task 1 report. Terms such as 'generated', 'output', 'utilisation', and 'consumption' are used accurately. There are minor spelling errors, such as 'ouput' and 'conumption', which are likely slips but should be avoided. The use of 'substantially lower' and 'ranked the lowest' shows a good ability to describe data trends. To achieve a higher band, try to incorporate more varied synonyms for 'figures' or 'recorded' to avoid repetitive phrasing when describing the data for each country.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The response displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are error-free, and the grammatical control is strong. You have used comparative structures well, such as 'the only country to record higher electricity consumption than production'. There is a minor error in 'the South Korea', where the definite article is unnecessary. Additionally, ensure consistent subject-verb agreement and punctuation when listing multiple data points. Overall, the grammar is accurate and does not impede communication, showing a solid command of complex structures.
