IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The bar chart illustrates the difference in the production and consumption of electricity in 2014. As we know that the electricity is a vital part of our life now so studies about it are also important.

The most populated country in the world is China and therefore the consumption of electricity there is also huge. In year 2014, the consumption of electricity in China was 5322 billion kWh while the production was 5398 billion kWh. It shows that there was a surplus in production.

Moving below there are some other countries which had high production of electricity in 2014. The second place goes to USA with production of 4099 billion kWh in that year. While Russia, Japan and India had similar condition. Canada and France had decent amount of surplus electricity.

The shortage of production took place in Germany where the consumption was 582.5 billion kWh but production was only 526.6 billion kWh. Korea also produced more than they consumed. This bar chart easily describes the production and consumption of electricity in some major countries of world.
