IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The bar chart illustrates the most 10 nations that produced and consumed electricity in 2014. Units are measured in billion kWh.

Overall, China recorded the highest in production of electricity followed by the United State as to Korea which had the least. Korea was seen to be the lowest user of electricity while China still remains the most in consumption of electricity.

China produced 5,398 billion kWh, with United State which came close to 4,099 billion kWh, while Russia, Japan, India, Canada, France, Brazil, Germany and Korea had the average of 500 billion kWh in electricity production.

Furthermore, consumption of electricity followed the same trend, with Korea which had the minimal use of electricity at 449.5 billion kWh, all through to Canada at average of 400 billion kWh. They was witnessed from India, Japan and Russia at 698.8 billion kWh, 856.7 billion kwh, and 1,038 billion kWh respectively. United States had a reasonable rise in electricity demand of 3,866 billion kWh, but China also remains the top electricity consumer 5,322 billion kWh in all the states given.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the chart, identifying China as the leader in both production and consumption. However, the analysis is flawed in its grouping of data. Stating that eight countries had an 'average of 500 billion kWh' is inaccurate and obscures the specific data points provided in the chart. Furthermore, the comparison between production and consumption is somewhat confusingly presented. While the key trends are identified, the lack of precision in reporting the figures for the middle-ranking countries prevents a higher score. The summary is functional but lacks the analytical depth required for a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs. Cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'while', and 'respectively' are used to link ideas. However, some transitions are mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'all through to Canada at average of 400 billion kWh'. The referencing is occasionally unclear, particularly in the second body paragraph where the flow of information becomes disjointed. Overall, the progression of ideas is evident, but the management of cohesive devices could be more sophisticated to ensure smoother transitions between the complex data sets.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to describe the data clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'minimal' and 'reasonable rise'. However, there are noticeable errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'most 10 nations' instead of 'top 10 nations' and 'They was witnessed from India', which is grammatically and lexically incorrect. The repetition of 'electricity' and 'billion kWh' is expected in this task, but the range of synonyms for describing trends is limited. The errors do not impede communication, but they do restrict the score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'United State' (should be 'United States'), 'They was witnessed', and 'China still remains the most in consumption'. These errors are frequent enough to be noticeable but do not prevent the reader from understanding the intended meaning. The punctuation is generally acceptable, but the sentence construction in the second paragraph is often clunky. To improve, the student should focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles and plural forms.
