IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The bar graph illustrates the production and consumption of electricity for the world's top ten countries in the year 2014.

Overall, China was the largest consumer as well as a producer of electricity in 2014, followed by the United States which was among the topmost producers and consumers. While Korea was the country producing least electricity, also their consumption was minimum. Germany was the only country consuming more then its production.

The largest producer of electricity was China which was producing around 5,398 billion kWh in 2014 but its consumption was also huge around 5,322 billion kWh, still it produced more than the consumption. The US was also listed in major producers with 4,099 billion kWh still its consumption was slightly lower i.e. 3866 billion kWh. Korea and Brazil were the regions consuming least electric energy which is around 450 billion kWh still they were able to cover their uses from their own production. The one country where electricity was consumed more than production is Germany, producing 526 billion kWh and consuming slightly more i.e. 582.5 billion kWh.

Russia was almost producing the same amount of electricity as much they were consuming which was around 1000 kWh. While Japan, India, Canada, France, Brazil and Korea were also consuming within the range of their production.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response successfully identifies the main features of the bar chart, such as China and the US being the top producers and consumers, and correctly highlights Germany as the only country with higher consumption than production. The overview is clear and covers the key trends. However, the data reporting is slightly inconsistent; for instance, the mention of '1000 kWh' for Russia is inaccurate based on the provided chart (which shows billions of kWh). Additionally, the grouping of countries in the final paragraph is somewhat vague. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are accurately transcribed and that comparisons are more precise throughout the report.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs that group information by theme. The use of cohesive devices such as 'while', 'however', and 'followed by' helps the flow of information. However, some transitions are a bit mechanical, and the referencing in the final paragraph is slightly repetitive. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the overview from the detailed analysis. To improve, try to vary the cohesive devices used to link sentences and ensure that the progression between paragraphs feels more natural and less like a list of facts.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, with terms like 'production', 'consumption', and 'billion kWh' used correctly. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'topmost' instead of 'leading' or 'highest', and 'cover their uses' which is slightly unnatural. The range of vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning, but it lacks the sophistication or precision required for a higher band. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and academic vocabulary to describe trends and data comparisons, avoiding repetitive phrasing like 'consuming' or 'producing' in every sentence.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'consuming more then its production' (should be 'than'), and issues with article usage and subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'Russia was almost producing'). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. The punctuation is generally correct, but the sentence structure could be more varied to demonstrate greater control. Focusing on eliminating basic errors and using a wider variety of complex structures would help improve the score in this criterion.
