IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The provided bar chart compares top ten nations based on their production and consumption of electricity in the year 2014.
Overall, China and USA were top two countries respectively for the production and consumption of electricity, whereas Korea was the lowest producer and consumer of electricity that year. Compared to the production, the consumption figure is relatively lower in all top ten counties except Germany.
In terms of production, China produced 5,398 billion kWh electricity in 2014, the highest number on the chart, followed by United states at 4,099 billion kWh electricity. The Russia, Japan and India produced 1,057, 936, and 871 billion kWh electricity respectively. While Canada ranked sixth on the chart with 618.9 billion kWh electricity production, France, Brazil and Germany produced a similar billion kWh of electricity that year. However, Korea generated the lowest number of electricity at 485.1 billion kWh.
Similarly, the consumption of electricity was the highest in China with 5,322 billion kWh, followed by USA at 3,866 billion kWh. Russia consumed (1,038 billion kWh electricity) almost what was produced. However, Germany was the only country to consume 582.5 billion kWh electricity which was more that what was produced (526.6).

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response effectively identifies the main features of the data, such as the dominance of China and the USA and the general trend where production exceeds consumption. You have selected relevant data points to support your summary. However, the report is slightly incomplete; while you mention that Germany is the only country to consume more than it produces, you fail to mention that the other countries listed (France, Brazil, Korea) also show specific relationships between production and consumption that could have been highlighted. Additionally, the grouping of France, Brazil, and Germany as having 'similar' production is a good analytical step, but the data could have been presented with more precision regarding the rankings.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs focusing on production and consumption respectively. The progression of ideas is smooth, and you use cohesive devices like 'In terms of', 'Similarly', and 'However' to link your points effectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different aspects of the data. To reach a higher band, ensure that referencing is always precise; for example, in the final sentence, 'consume 582.5 billion kWh electricity' is slightly awkward phrasing. Overall, the structure is clear and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information clearly. Phrases like 'top ten nations', 'highest number on the chart', and 'generated the lowest' are accurate. However, there are some minor issues with collocation and word choice, such as 'produced a similar billion kWh' (which is imprecise) and 'almost what was produced' (which is slightly informal). To improve, try to use more varied reporting verbs or nouns related to energy statistics, such as 'output', 'surpassed', or 'marginal difference'. The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the sophistication required for a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'The Russia, Japan and India' (incorrect use of the definite article) and 'more that what was produced' (a typo for 'than'). Additionally, the sentence 'Germany was the only country to consume 582.5 billion kWh electricity which was more that what was produced' is slightly clunky. Despite these errors, the meaning is always clear, and the errors do not impede communication. Increasing the variety of complex structures would help improve this score.
