IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The provided bar chart compares top ten nations based on their production and consumption of electricity in the year 2014.
Overall, China and USA were top two countries respectively for the production and consumption of electricity, whereas Korea was the lowest producer and consumer of electricity that year. Compared to the production, the consumption figure is relatively lower in all top ten counties except Germany.
In terms of production, China produced 5,398 billion kWh electricity in 2014, the highest number on the chart, followed by United states at 4,099 billion kWh electricity. The Russia, Japan and India produced 1,057, 936, and 871 billion kWh electricity respectively. While Canada ranked sixth on the chart with 618.9 billion kWh electricity production, France, Brazil and Germany produced a similar billion kWh of electricity that year. However, Korea generated the lowest number of electricity at 485.1 billion kWh.
Similarly, the consumption of electricity was the highest in China with 5,322 billion kWh, followed by USA at 3,866 billion kWh. Russia consumed (1,038 billion kWh electricity) almost what was produced. However, Germany was the only country to consume 582.5 billion kWh electricity which was more that what was produced (526.6).

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response effectively identifies the main features of the chart, including the leading positions of China and the USA and the general trend of production exceeding consumption. You have selected relevant data points to support your summary. However, the report is slightly incomplete; while you mention that Germany is the only country to consume more than it produces, you fail to mention that the data for the other countries shows a consistent gap between production and consumption. To reach a higher band, ensure you provide a more comprehensive comparison across all categories rather than just listing figures for the top few countries.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs focusing on production and consumption respectively. The use of cohesive devices such as 'whereas', 'in terms of', and 'similarly' helps the flow of information. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the referencing could be smoother. For instance, the transition between the production and consumption paragraphs could be more sophisticated to better highlight the relationship between the two datasets. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate and the progression of ideas is easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information clearly, using terms like 'generated', 'consumed', and 'nations'. There are some minor issues with collocation and word choice, such as 'the highest number on the chart' (referring to a quantity) and 'almost what was produced'. To improve, try to use more precise academic vocabulary to describe trends and data, such as 'surpassed', 'accounted for', or 'a marginal difference'. The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the flexibility and precision required for higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is generally effective. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'the United states' (should be 'the United States'), 'the Russia' (should be 'Russia'), and 'more that what was produced' (should be 'more than'). Additionally, there are minor punctuation errors, such as the placement of parentheses. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles to enhance accuracy.
