Student answer (Band 6.5)
The provided bar chart compares top ten nations based on their production and consumption of electricity in the year 2014.
Overall, China and USA were top two countries respectively for the production and consumption of electricity, whereas Korea was the lowest producer and consumer of electricity that year. Compared to the production, the consumption figure is relatively lower in all top ten counties except Germany.
In terms of production, China produced 5,398 billion kWh electricity in 2014, the highest number on the chart, followed by United states at 4,099 billion kWh electricity. The Russia, Japan and India produced 1,057, 936, and 871 billion kWh electricity respectively. While Canada ranked sixth on the chart with 618.9 billion kWh electricity production, France, Brazil and Germany produced a similar billion kWh of electricity that year. However, Korea generated the lowest number of electricity at 485.1 billion kWh.
Similarly, the consumption of electricity was the highest in China with 5,322 billion kWh, followed by USA at 3,866 billion kWh. Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have successfully identified the main features of the chart, including the top producers and consumers and the notable exception of Germany. The data is accurately reported, and you have made relevant comparisons between production and consumption. To reach a higher band, ensure you avoid minor inaccuracies in data reporting; for example, you stated that France, Brazil, and Germany produced a 'similar' amount, but the chart shows distinct differences. Additionally, ensure all data points are clearly linked to the specific units (billion kWh) consistently throughout the report to avoid ambiguity.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs focusing on production and consumption respectively. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use cohesive devices such as 'whereas', 'similarly', and 'however' effectively to link sentences and ideas. To improve, consider varying your sentence starters further and ensuring that the transition between the production and consumption paragraphs is even smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the overall clarity of the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information clearly. Phrases like 'top ten nations', 'highest number on the chart', and 'accounting for' are used appropriately. However, there are some minor issues with collocation and word choice, such as 'lowest number of electricity' (should be 'lowest amount of electricity') and 'the United states' (should be 'the United States'). To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more precise academic vocabulary, such as 'surpassed', 'marginal', or 'exceeded', to describe the data relationships more sophisticatedly.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, and your meaning is consistently clear. There are some minor grammatical errors, such as missing articles ('the Russia', 'the United states') and awkward phrasing like 'more that what was produced'. While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the response from reaching the highest band. To improve, focus on consistent article usage and refining your comparative structures. The majority of your sentences are error-free, which is a positive sign of your control over the language.
