Student answer (Band 6.0)
The bar chart demonstrates the top ten countries that produced and consumed electricity in 2014. Overall, China led the pack in both production and consumption, followed closely by the USA. From rank three to ten, all countries were neck and neck. Other than Germany, every other county in the list had greater production than consumption.
The two highest producers and consumers of electricity were China and the USA, with China coming out on top, sporting a production and consumption amount of 5.398 and 5.322 billion kWh. In comparison, the USA produced around 4.099 billion kWh and consumed around 3.866 billion kWh. Conversely, the country ranked lowest is Korea with featured production and consumption values of around 485.1 and 449.5 billion kWh.
The countries in the middle ranks showcased comparable readings, ranging from Russia's 1057 and 1038 billion kWh production and consumption to Germany's 526.6 and 582.5 billion kWh. Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response successfully identifies the main features of the bar chart, including the leading positions of China and the USA and the general trend of production exceeding consumption. You have made relevant comparisons, such as noting Germany as an exception. However, the response is incomplete as it ends abruptly mid-sentence in the final paragraph. This omission prevents a full overview and impacts the overall development of the task. To reach a higher band, ensure that all observations are fully articulated and that the conclusion or final analysis is completed to provide a sense of closure to the report.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a logical progression of ideas. You use cohesive devices such as 'In comparison', 'Conversely', and 'Furthermore' to link information effectively. However, the abrupt ending of the text disrupts the flow and coherence of the final section. While the paragraphing is appropriate, the lack of a finished thought at the end of the response makes the overall structure feel incomplete. Improving the consistency of your paragraph structure and ensuring all sentences are finished will significantly enhance the coherence of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'led the pack', 'neck and neck', and 'showcased comparable readings'. These phrases are generally appropriate for a descriptive task. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'sporting a production', which is slightly informal for an academic report. Additionally, the repetition of 'production and consumption' is understandable given the data, but could be varied with synonyms or referencing. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey meaning clearly, but lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher band scores.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. Most sentences are clear and easy to follow. There are some minor errors, such as the typo 'county' instead of 'country' and the incomplete final sentence. Despite these, your control of grammar is generally good, and the errors do not impede communication. To improve, focus on proofreading to catch small slips and ensure that all complex sentences are fully formed and punctuated correctly. The variety of structures is sufficient for a band 6.5, but more consistent accuracy is needed for higher levels.
