IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The bar chart illustrates the amount of electricity produced and consumed by the top ten electricity-producing countries in 2014, measured in billion kWh.
Overall, China and the United States were by far the largest producers and consumers, while the remaining countries recorded considerably lower figures. Production exceeded consumption in almost all countries, except Germany.
China generated 5,398 billion kWh, slightly more than its consumption of 5,322 billion kWh. The United States ranked second, producing 4,099 billion kWh and consuming 3,866 billion kWh. Russia followed, with figures of 1,057 and 1,038 billion kWh, respectively. Japan and India produced 936.2 and 871 billion kWh, while their consumption was 856.7 and 698.8 billion kWh.
Among the remaining countries, Canada and France produced 618.9 and 561.2 billion kWh, respectively. Brazil and Germany had similar production levels, at 530.7 and 526.6 billion kWh. However, Germany consumed more than it produced, whereas South Korea recorded the lowest figures.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response effectively addresses the task by summarizing the main features of the bar chart. You have successfully identified the top two countries, China and the United States, and noted the general trend that production exceeds consumption for most nations. The inclusion of specific data points for all ten countries is accurate and supports your summary well. To reach a higher band, you could provide a more detailed comparison of the 'middle' and 'lower' tier countries, perhaps by grouping them more explicitly or highlighting the specific gap between production and consumption for countries like India or South Korea, rather than just listing figures.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The report is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview paragraph, and two body paragraphs that group the data effectively. The progression of ideas is smooth, moving from the largest producers to the remaining countries. Cohesive devices such as 'while', 'whereas', and 'respectively' are used accurately to link information. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure allows the reader to follow the comparison of data points without difficulty. The use of referencing is clear, ensuring that the reader understands which figures belong to which country.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information with precision. Terms such as 'generated', 'recorded', and 'exceeded' are used appropriately in the context of electricity production. The use of 'respectively' is a good example of precise academic language. While the vocabulary is accurate and fits the task well, it is somewhat functional. To achieve a higher score, you could incorporate more varied synonyms for 'production' and 'consumption' or use more sophisticated collocations to describe the trends, such as 'outstripped' or 'marginal difference'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The response displays a good control of grammatical structures. You have successfully used a mix of simple and complex sentences, such as the contrastive structure 'whereas South Korea recorded the lowest figures'. Punctuation is generally accurate, and there are no significant errors that impede communication. The majority of your sentences are error-free. To improve further, you could experiment with a wider variety of complex sentence structures, such as using participle clauses (e.g., 'Ranking second, the United States produced...') to increase the sophistication of your writing.
