IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The bar chart illustrates the electricity production and consumption, in billion kWh by ten different countries in 2014. China and the USA created and used much more electicity compared to others, with China dominating the rankings. Furthermore, it can be observed that only Germany used more electricity than it could produce.

China was the highest producer and consumer of electricity with values of 5398 and 5322 billion kWh. The USA follows behind with figures of 4099 and 3866 billion kWh. The rest of the countries in the ranking lag significantly behind, with Russia being the third highest, having a production and consumption value of 1057 and 1038 billion kWh. Next in the rankings are Japan, India, Canada, France, Brazil, Germany and Korea.

Moving down the list, the remaining countries all share similar production and consumption amounts, with Korea laying at the very bottom of the list. Korea produced 485.1 billion kWh electricity and consumed 449.5 billion kWh of it. Additonally, Germany is the only country in the list whose production of 526.6 billion kWh is exceeded by its consumption of 582.5 billion kWh.
