Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers all parts of the task by identifying the top ten countries and comparing production and consumption. The main features are highlighted, such as China and the USA being the leaders, and the notable exception of Germany where consumption exceeds production. However, the report is essentially a list of figures. To reach a higher band, you should group the data more effectively—for example, by categorizing countries into high, medium, and low producers—rather than listing them country by country. This would allow for more sophisticated comparisons and a clearer overview of the trends present in the data.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is organized logically, starting with an overview and moving into specific data points. Paragraphing is present, though the body paragraph is quite dense. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Overall' and 'respectively', but the transition between the list of countries feels mechanical. The flow could be improved by using more varied linking phrases to connect the comparisons between countries, rather than relying on a repetitive structure of 'Country X produced Y and consumed Z'. The progression of ideas is clear, but the lack of varied cohesive devices limits the score.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, using terms like 'production', 'consumption', and 'exceeded'. However, the range is somewhat limited and repetitive. There are minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'Japan production and consumption was' (should be 'Japan's production and consumption were') and 'in majority of countries' (should be 'in the majority of countries'). To improve, you should incorporate more varied verbs and nouns to describe trends, such as 'outstripped', 'surpassed', or 'accounted for', rather than repeating 'production' and 'consumption' throughout the text.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement and articles, such as 'production of electricity exceed' (should be 'exceeds') and 'in majority of countries' (missing 'the'). Additionally, the sentence 'Japan production and consumption was 936.2 and 856.7 respectively' contains a possessive error and a subject-verb agreement error. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher band. Focusing on proofreading for articles and pluralization would significantly improve the accuracy of your writing.
