IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The given bar chart demonstrates the information of ten top nations for the manufacturing and utilisation of electricity in 2014.The data has been calibrated in billion.
First and foremost, China recorded the percentage of production of electricity at 5,398 billion kWh While, proportion of consumption was calculated at 5,332 kWh. After that, production ratio of United states was 4,099 kWh and consumption ratio was 3,866 kWh. After, Russia recorded production ratio at 1,057 kWh, utilisation proportion was 1,038 kWh. Furthermore, ratio of Japan in term of production was 936.2 kWh and consumption ratio was 856.7 kWh.
In addition, India recorded production ratio at 871 kWh whereas, consumption ratio was 698.8 kWh. Whereas Canada calculated production data at 618.9 kWh, consumption proportion was 499.9 kWh.
Overall, it can be clearly seen that highest data was recorded by China in both element production as well as consumption. Whereas least data was recorded by Korea throughout the period.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main features of the chart by identifying the top countries and comparing production and consumption. However, the analysis is somewhat mechanical, listing data points rather than synthesising them into a clear overview. While the prompt asks for a summary, the response relies heavily on a repetitive list-like structure. The units are also incorrectly labelled as 'kWh' instead of 'billion kWh', which is a significant inaccuracy regarding the data provided. To improve, focus on grouping countries with similar trends and ensuring the data units are accurately represented to reflect the chart's scale.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The response is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the information. However, the use of cohesive devices is repetitive and sometimes awkward, such as the frequent use of 'After that', 'After', and 'Whereas'. The progression of ideas feels mechanical because each sentence simply introduces a new country without connecting the data points in a meaningful way. Paragraphing is present but the internal structure of the paragraphs lacks variety, making the flow feel somewhat disjointed. Improving the range of linking words and using referencing to avoid repeating the same sentence structures would enhance the coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. Words like 'manufacturing', 'utilisation', 'ratio', and 'proportion' are used repeatedly, often incorrectly in the context of electricity output. For instance, 'ratio' is used where 'figure' or 'amount' would be more appropriate. There is little evidence of less common lexical items or collocations. To reach a higher band, you should vary your vocabulary by using synonyms such as 'generated', 'consumed', 'output', and 'figures', and ensure that terms are used in their correct collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures, but there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation. For example, 'The data has been calibrated in billion' is grammatically awkward, and there are missing articles and incorrect capitalisation (e.g., 'United states'). The sentence 'While, proportion of consumption was calculated at 5,332 kWh' contains a comma splice and an unnecessary comma after 'While'. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to limit the score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct article usage will help improve accuracy.
