The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The bar chart illustrates the amount of electricity produced and consumed by the ten leading electricity producing countries in 2014, measured in billion kWh.

Overall, china and United states were by far the largest producers and consumers of electricity, while the figures for the remaining countries were considerably lower.

China ranked first, producing 5,398 billion kWh and consuming 5,322 billion kWh. The United states ranked second, with the production of 4099 billion kWh and consuming 3,866 billion kWh. Russia ranked third, generating 1,057 billion kWh and consuming 1,038 billion kWh.

Japan and Indian occupied fourth and fifth placed. Japan produced 936.2 billion kWh and consumed 856.7 billion kWh, while Indian produced 871 billion kWh and consumed 698.8 billion kWh electricity. Canada, France and Brazil produced between 531 and 619 billion kWh, with the consumption somewhat lower in each case.

Finally, Germany generated 526.6 billion kWh but consumed 582.5 billion kWh, whereas South Korea produced 485.1 billion kWh and consumed 449.5 billion kWh.
