Student answer (Band 6.5)

The bar chart gives information about the top ten countries, such as China, the United States, Russia, Japan, India, Canada, France, Brazil, Germany, and Korea, for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014. Units are measured in billion kilowatt-hours.

Overall, the production of China was higher than that of the United States. China had the largest amount in production and consumption of electricity, while Korea had the least amount in both categories of electricity.

First of all, China ranked first in production of electricity, with 5,398 billion kWh, and its consumption stood at 5,322 billion kWh. Subsequently, the United States ranked second, producing 4,009 billion kWh and consuming 3,866 billion kWh. Next, Russia ranked third, generating 1,057 billion kWh and consuming 1,038 billion kWh. Following this, Japan took the fourth spot, generating 936.2 billion kWh and consuming 856.7 billion kWh respectively. Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers all parts of the task well. You have successfully identified the main features and provided relevant comparisons between the countries. The overview is clear, highlighting the dominance of China and the position of South Korea. You have used data effectively to support your points. To reach a higher band, ensure that you avoid listing data sequentially for every country, as this can become repetitive. Instead, focus more on grouping countries with similar trends or highlighting significant gaps between the top and bottom performers to demonstrate a more analytical approach to the data.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is logically organized with a clear progression. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the overview from the detailed body paragraphs. You use a variety of cohesive devices such as 'subsequently', 'following this', and 'in terms of' to link ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing could be more varied. The flow is generally smooth, and the information is easy to follow. To improve, try to vary the sentence structure when introducing new data points to avoid a repetitive 'subject-verb-number' pattern.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'generating', 'yielding', and 'positioned'. The vocabulary is generally accurate and appropriate for a report on statistical data. However, there is some repetition of basic verbs like 'ranked' and 'produced'. To achieve a higher score, incorporate more sophisticated synonyms or collocations related to data analysis, such as 'surpassed', 'accounted for', or 'a significant margin'. The spelling is accurate throughout, and the terminology related to electricity production is used correctly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response shows a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You demonstrate control over punctuation and basic grammar, with very few errors that impede communication. Most sentences are clear and well-constructed. To move into the higher bands, try to incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical structures, such as passive voice constructions (e.g., 'It was observed that...') or relative clauses, to add sophistication to your writing. The current level of accuracy is high, and the errors present are minor and infrequent.
