IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The bar chart illustrates electricity production and consumption in the top ten largest countries in 2014. The data on electricity is represented in billion kwh.

Overall, it is clear that china and the united states dominated both the generation and usage of electricity, while the republic of Korea recorded the lowest figures. Notably, Germany was the only nation where demand exceeded supply.

The first feature is that china produced 5,398 billion kwh and consumed a smaller amount, 5.322 billion kwh. Subsequently, the second largest country, the united states, generated 4.099 billion kwh against a consumption of 3,966 billion kwh. Russia came next with the most identical levels of production and use, at just over 1,050 billon kwh. japan showed a small surplus, producing 936.2 billion kwh compared with 856.7 billion kwh consumed.

In addition, India, Canada, France, and Brazil accounted for approximately 500 and 900 billion kwh of the recorded numbers. However, Germany stood out, consuming more then it produced with figures of approximately 582.5 billion kwh and 526.2 billion kwh, respectively. by contrast Korea registered the smallest totals overall, at 485.1 and 449.5 billion kwh.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have successfully identified the main features of the chart, including the dominance of China and the United States and the unique position of Germany. You have also made relevant comparisons between production and consumption. However, there are some inaccuracies in your data reporting. For instance, you wrote '5.322 billion kwh' for China's consumption, which is a decimal error compared to the likely intended '5,322'. Additionally, you grouped India, Canada, France, and Brazil together without providing specific data points for them, which limits the depth of your analysis. To improve, ensure all figures are transcribed accurately and provide more specific comparisons for the remaining countries to fully address all parts of the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'Notably', 'Subsequently', and 'In addition' to guide the reader. However, the progression of ideas in the third paragraph is slightly mechanical. The referencing is generally clear, though the transition between the group of four countries and the specific mention of Germany could be smoother. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate, and the information flows in a logical sequence, meeting the requirements for a Band 7.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information clearly, using terms like 'dominated', 'surplus', 'registered', and 'accounted for'. There are some minor errors in word choice, such as 'most identical levels', which is not a standard collocation. Additionally, there is a spelling error ('billon' instead of 'billion') and a minor punctuation error ('more then' instead of 'more than'). While you attempt to use varied vocabulary, these slips prevent the response from reaching a higher band. Focusing on precise collocations will help improve your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'Germany was the only nation where demand exceeded supply'. While your meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical and punctuation errors, including inconsistent capitalization (e.g., 'china', 'united states', 'japan', 'Korea') and the lack of capitalization at the start of some sentences (e.g., 'by contrast'). These errors are frequent enough to be noticeable but do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, ensure consistent capitalization and proofread for minor slips in sentence structure.
