The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The bar chart compares top 10 nations in terms of electricity production and consumption in 2014, with figures measured in billions kWh.

Overall, the chart shows that China and United States dominated both global production and consumption of electricity with substantial margin. Furthermore, almost every nation generated more electricity than it consumption. With Germany standing an exception.

China being in the leading position generated 5,398 billion kWh and consumed 5,322 billion kWh nearly identical. United States on the second position produced 4,099 billion kWh and consumed 3,866 billion kWh. While Russia was the only other country which crossed the threshold of 1,000 billion kWh for both indicators, producing 1,057 billion kWh of electricity and Cunsuming 1,038 billion kWh.

The remaining seven countries recorded significantly lower range of figures ranging from 485.1 billion kWh to 936.2 illion kWh. Japan and India produced electricity recorded, at 936.2 and 871.0 billion kWh respectively. While consumption recorded, at 856.7 and 698.8 billion kWh. Canada, France, Brazil, Republic of Korea followed the same trend of generating more power than consumption with Korea registering the lowest numbers overall in the group, 485.1 production and 449.5 billion kWh consumption. In contrast, Germany produced less than the consumption recorded. Production, at 526.6 billion kWh and consumption, at 582.5 billion kWh.
