IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The chart compares the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in between 2014.

Overall, China consume first rank with the highest production and consumption while USA were the second to produce high level of electricity. Furthermore, other seven countries make lower level of consumptions according to thie rank in the table respectively.

After analyzing the point, it can be seen that in China the electricity of production billion kWh was approximetly 5,398 and the consumption billion kWh was very close with the value of 5,322. However, USA contain roughly 4,099 and the consumption was 3,866 to make electricity. Therefore, Russia and Japan are the third and fourth highest in the chart with value of 1,057 and 936.2 in production and 1,038 and 856.7 was in consumption.

In contrast, India, Canada, France are very close in number to making prodction and conspution in electricity with the ratio of 871,618,561.2 respectively. In Brazil and Germany the production billion kWh almost same but in consumption Germany rise with the numbers of 582.5. Consequently, Korea was the lowest making production with the rank of 10th producing 485.1 and 449.5.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The student attempts to address the task by summarizing the main features of the bar chart, identifying China and the USA as top producers and consumers, and mentioning the remaining countries. However, the response suffers from significant weaknesses in data reporting and task fulfillment. Several figures are inaccurate or awkwardly stated, such as 'approximetly 5,398' and referring to billions of kWh in a confusing manner. Furthermore, comparisons are vague or poorly structured, and the overview lacks a clear synthesis of the broader trends shown in the chart. Consequently, the response falls short of fully developing a clear, well-supported overview, aligning best with a Band 5 descriptor where the task is addressed only partially and ideas remain somewhat limited.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The response is divided into logical paragraphs, including an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs detailing specific data points. However, the overall progression is disrupted by mechanical and sometimes confusing cohesive devices. Phrases like 'After analyzing the point' and 'In contrast' are used inappropriately given the context of the data. Furthermore, referencing is occasionally unclear, such as listing a string of numbers ('871,618,561.2') without clearly linking each figure to the respective country or metric. Paragraphing is present, but the internal flow and logical sequencing require tighter control. This places the response firmly in the Band 5 category due to inadequate or inaccurate cohesive devices and a lack of clear overall progression.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The student demonstrates a limited and minimally adequate vocabulary range suitable for describing basic data trends, utilizing words like 'production', 'consumption', 'highest', and 'lowest'. However, there are numerous lexical errors, awkward word choices, and typos throughout the text. Examples include 'consume first rank' instead of 'ranked first', 'make lower level of consumptions', 'approximetly', 'contain roughly' instead of 'produced roughly', and 'conspution'. These noticeable errors and non-standard collocations cause occasional difficulty for the reader. While the vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the general topic, the frequency of lexical inaccuracies restricts the score to a Band 5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control over grammar and syntax is weak. There are frequent grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('China consume first rank', 'USA were the second'), awkward phrasing ('the electricity of production billion kWh was'), and missing prepositions or incorrect word forms ('Germany rise with the numbers'). Punctuation and sentence construction often impede smooth reading. Although some basic sentences are formed correctly, the high frequency of grammatical and structural inaccuracies places this response at Band 5, where frequent errors can cause difficulty for the reader.
