Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.5
The response fails to meet the minimum length requirement of 150 words, containing only 116 words, which negatively impacts task achievement. While the student attempts to highlight main features such as China leading in production and consumption and Germany having higher consumption than production, the overview is incomplete and the body paragraphs break off abruptly mid-sentence and mid-thought. Key data points are missing or poorly integrated, and the second paragraph stops after only two sentences without fully summarizing the chart data. To achieve a higher band score, the writer must ensure the word count exceeds 150 words and provide a more thorough, complete overview and detailed comparison of the top ten countries.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response has an introduction, but the organizational structure quickly breaks down as the second paragraph trails off incompletely. Cohesive devices such as 'To commence with' and 'Overall' are used to signal progression, but referencing and logical sequencing are hindered by the truncation of the text. Paragraphing is attempted, but the second paragraph lacks closure and proper development. To improve, the writer needs to ensure that each body paragraph is fully fleshed out with clear topic sentences and appropriate cohesive ties that guide the reader smoothly through comparisons without abrupt endings.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task, attempting words such as 'manufacturing', 'utilizing', 'prominent', and 'overwhelming'. However, there are notable lexical inaccuracies and awkward word choices, such as 'famous ten countries' instead of 'top ten countries', 'China expressed it the most prominent feature', and 'United States considerably competted the China by manufacture'. Spelling is generally acceptable, but collocation and word formation issues restrict the lexical score. To improve, the student should focus on precise phrasing suitable for data description and learn the correct forms of related words (e.g., 'manufacture' as a noun or verb).
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response incorporates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'Overall, it is evident that the balance among categories changed markedly over time...' However, grammatical control is weak due to frequent errors, including awkward verb forms ('the overwhelming increased in the production'), incorrect prepositions, and incomplete sentence fragments in the second paragraph ('Russia accounted for produce 1057 and use 1038'). Punctuation is basic. While some sentences are understandable, the density of errors causes occasional difficulty for the reader. The writer should work on verb tense consistency, infinitive versus gerund usage, and structural completeness.
