Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response successfully addresses the main features of the prompt by identifying the top ten countries for electricity production and consumption in 2014. The student outlines the overall trends, correctly pointing out that China had the highest figures and Korea, Rep. had the lowest. Key data points are selected and reported, such as China peaking at 5,398 billion kWh produced and 5,322 billion kWh consumed, alongside figures for Russia, Japan, India, and Brazil. However, there is a tendency to crowd data into dense sentences without sufficient synthesis or comparison, which prevents full development of the task. Nevertheless, all parts of the prompt are covered, and the key overview is present, aligning well with the criteria for a Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement and attempts logical organisation by grouping data points. However, paragraphing is underdeveloped, with the bulk of the body text compressed into a single, overly dense paragraph following the introduction. Cohesive devices are sometimes faulty or mechanical, and referencing is occasionally awkward, such as repeating 'the china produced and consumed' and using clunky transitional phrasing like 'but the India developet'. Progression within the paragraphs feels disjointed because sentences are crammed with multiple statistical figures without adequate signposting or smooth relational flow. Overall, the structural handling and cohesion correspond to a Band 5.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task, successfully employing domain-specific terms such as 'production', 'consumption', and 'billion kWh'. There are, however, noticeable word choice and collocation errors, such as 'lowest figures of electricity have produced by' instead of 'produced by', and spelling/morphology errors like 'developet'. Less common vocabulary is attempted, but inaccuracies in form and preposition usage occur regularly, such as 'consumed the 698.9 billion kWh' and 'produced the Brazil'. These errors do not seriously impede communication but restrict the score to a Band 5.5, reflecting a mix of adequate task-specific leccal items and frequent minor slips.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control over grammar is inconsistent. There are frequent grammatical errors, particularly regarding passive voice construction ('lowest figures of electricity have produced by', 'electricity have produced the Brazil') and article misuse ('the China', 'the Russia and Japan', 'the India'). Subject-verb agreement and tense consistency also falter in places, such as mixing past tenses with present implications. Although the meaning remains mostly clear despite these errors, the high frequency of inaccurate complex structures limits the response to a Band 5.0.
