Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.5
The response attempts to address the prompt by identifying the highest and lowest countries for electricity production and consumption, namely China and the Korea Republic. However, the task achievement is significantly hindered by inadequate data selection and superficial reporting. While the student mentions China (5,398) and the Korea Republic (485.1 and 449.5 billion kWh), they fail to provide a comprehensive overview of the main features or include necessary comparisons among the other top ten countries shown in the chart. Furthermore, the explanations regarding why these countries produce electricity tend to drift into irrelevant speculation and personal commentary about village development and factory appliances, rather than strictly summarising the visual data. Consequently, the response only partially addresses the prompt requirements.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.0
The response shows an attempt at paragraphing, separating the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. However, the overall organisation lacks a clear logical progression and smooth transitions. Cohesive devices are either missing, repetitive, or inaccurate, such as starting multiple sentences with 'it is' or 'these country'. The referencing is frequently unclear, leaving the reader confused about which noun a pronoun refers to. Additionally, the mechanical nature of the cohesive links and the abrupt shifts in thought severely disrupt the flow of the text, preventing it from achieving a higher score in this criterion.
Lexical Resource — Band 4.0
The vocabulary used throughout the essay is basic and repetitive, with frequent lexical errors and non-standard word choices. Examples include 'coutries' for countries, 'concuption' for consumption, 'mechine' for machinery, and 'matrerials' for resources. The student attempts less common vocabulary such as 'generation' and 'consumption', but these terms are repeatedly misspelled or incorrectly applied in context, such as 'minimum production but it is very low useful eletricity use'. There is also a heavy reliance on a very narrow pool of words, which strains the reader and restricts the lexical range to a minimally adequate level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0
The grammatical range is extremely limited, consisting mostly of simple sentences that are frequently marred by basic structural errors. There is an almost complete lack of accurate complex sentence forms, and punctuation is largely neglected, demonstrated by lowercase beginnings for sentences like 'this shows' and 'it is'. Frequent errors include subject-verb agreement issues, such as 'both country highly develop country' and 'china have', incorrect verb forms like 'to geneatre the develop to consuption', and severe fragment sentences. These persistent errors frequently impede communication and obscure the intended meaning of the student's message.
