IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The bar chart illustrates the ten countries who produced and consumed electricity in 2014.

Taking a general overview, it is evident that the highest figure observed in china for both production and consumption, while brazil was the country, where electricity was less produced.

It is clearly seen that in China, both factors were showed by almost same percentage 5,398% and 5,322% respectively. Electricity was highly established in US by 4,099%, while 3866% consumed. The percentage of both production and consumption was almost remained constant in Russia, whereas in India there was gradual difference between them by 87% of production and 693.8% of consumption.

Moving towards the rest of the information, In Canada, 618% of electricity was introduced, however 499.1% of consumption was observed. The production of electricity was approximately remained same in France, Brazil and Germany. There was difference in the consumption of electricity in France and Brazil, whereas 582.5% electricity was consumed. In the case of korea, 485.1% electricity was installed, while only 449.5% of consumption was showed.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The student attempts to address the task by summarizing the main features of the bar chart, noting China as the top producer and consumer, and referencing several other countries such as the US, Russia, India, and Canada. However, the response contains significant factual and interpretive errors regarding the scale of the data. For instance, percentages are cited incorrectly as astronomical figures (e.g., '5,398%' and '693.8%'), which indicates a misinterpretation of the chart's units (billion kWh). Furthermore, key comparisons are omitted or obscured due to these inaccurate data points. While an overview is attempted, the overall development is limited and flawed by these data reporting inaccuracies, placing the response at Band 5.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The response is organized into four paragraphs, including an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs, which provides a basic structural framework. Cohesive devices and transition markers such as 'Taking a general overview', 'It is clearly seen', and 'Moving towards the rest of the information' are utilized to guide the reader through the text. However, referencing and logical progression are sometimes faulty. For example, the connection between sentences in the second body paragraph feels disjointed, and pronoun referencing lacks clarity in places. Paragraphing is present, but overall cohesion is somewhat mechanical and repetitive, aligning with the Band 5.5 descriptors.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The lexical range is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The student employs standard vocabulary related to the topic, such as 'produced', 'consumed', 'percentage', and 'difference'. However, there are notable word choice and collocation errors, such as using 'established' and 'installed' instead of generated or produced, and treating raw data numbers as percentages with impossible mathematical values. Spelling is generally acceptable, but the misuse of vocabulary items and inaccurate data rendering restricts the score to a Band 5.0, as these lexical inaccuracies cause difficulty for the reader.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like 'It is evident that...' and 'while brazil was the country, where...'. However, grammatical control is weak, with frequent errors including punctuation mistakes (e.g., unnecessary commas before relative clauses), tense inconsistencies (e.g., 'was showed', 'was remained'), and subject-verb agreement issues (e.g., 'electricity was highly established'). Complex structures are often faulty, and errors require the reader to slow down. The frequency of these structural inaccuracies places this criterion at Band 5.0.
